Title: Charlie's Creek, what a shame!
Post by: Cannonballkev on July 07, 2015, 08:09:32 PM
We knew it was coming but man I wasnt expecting what they did to it!  ALL ruts are graded and smoothed over, Ruby Mine road (dead ends to big circle , cool camp spot by creek). Is no more, road is blocked by freshly cut down trees and bermed up, it would be hard to even hike thrre anymore.  Natural rocks were graded out of the ground and replaced with dirt and gravel.
Personally, I think more harm was done with all the grading, it was the muddiest ive ever seen it.  Lots of loose dirt, and mounds of dirt thst were pushed to the side.
So much for "treading lightly"  they left three crumpled up metal culverts that they dug up, just sitting in the bushes.
You can drive a car on the "road" now. Hardest part is driving across the river.  I think more erosion and more expense to the county is going happen because more traffic will be on it because it is so smooth.
I understand the reasoning behind it, just wasn't expecting this result. What's next? Trey Mountain?

Just my opinion!

What is the reason?

Because idiots make their own trails off of the main road.  Caution tape was put up across the illegal areas.  Which most of was torn down. Why didn't they block access to those spots?

Definitely sad to hear about this, but it was inevitable with the amount of traffic it was getting and all the idiots out there who think that they are cool driving off the trail. I went out there with a few friends in May as a starter trail for one of my buddies who just got a jeep and one section was so rutted out he actually had some trouble making it (stock TJ, no lockers).

GA.  They've had folks piling thru there every week since they showed some kids where it was.

Dodd Road should be next.

well i figured it wasnt FL or CA, I just doubt there is a local Towns Co FB page with 6000 members. NOONE can blame any of this on locals, its purely a traffic issue. The locals have been riding these roads for no telling how many years and there was never a problem until large groups started publicizing its existence, now the ones of us that actually used the road for camping and access to the river are just screwed, (well I guess I can take the Honda). We rode through Coopers Crk to flatlands last weekend and saw several places closed that we used to ride, unfortunately with the popularity of "off the shelf" ready to go OEM vehicles and people with more money than sense we in the local community are just forced to deal with the outcome. There is no amount of money or involvement that can fix some of these issues, the enforcement and counties are burned out on fixing roadbeds and picking up trash.

Local to Atlanta, but all of GA.  They are an Atlanta/N GA widespread group on Facebook.  They don't know any better and leadership has just recently listened to our cry's to condemn and police their own for activities that are far from TreadLightly.

No but I meant with the sheer numbers throwed at it
combined with no Charlie's Creek to play on......make's
me worry about it. I hope I'm wrong and that they have
turned over a new leaf.

Damn! I'm off the scene for a few months and come back to this crap!!!

CC was one of my wife and my favorite local getaways.  Well if anyone is willing, I would go up there when the "FB" ride is scheduled and block the road. Sure that's not legal, but a statement needs to be made.

I live up here, right in between Charlie's creek, Bell mountain and Trey mountain, just aggravating!  Still a nice ride, but so is the interstate

I heard through the grapevine that at the last Helen Jeepfest (this past spring) there was a heavy presence of Forest Rangers present on Trey to keep em out of the mud holes. I suspect there are many FS roads that could use some resurfacing. And if you watch the FBgroups they will give em all the attention needed to quicken the tractors. Just likes good fishin spot if you know a  place where nobody goes, that is legal.  It's probably not a good idea to share it, much less on Facebook. I'd rather ride the parks. And use the FS roads for hiking and camping.

went for a little ride today because we thought it was gonna storm this afternoon and my wife has something against paddlin down a river with lightning   //LMAO//  Anyways.. we went through charlie creek on our way to Clayton and honestly i think they did more damage with the grading than good. There are still a couple campsites that are open, but where they graded they left it dirt which has since turned to mud with the traffic. It wont be long and it will be back to ruts and flexxin id say. the thing that really got off with me is they didnt do anything about the mudholes, didnt even ditch em out or nothing to make effort to dry out the road bed. So really the road will end up in worse shape, and above that the traffic through there is crazy now, I met 15-18 rigs from one end to the other, i lost count through the cussin about it. We wanted to fish on the Persimmon side but nothing was biting, so we took a left just to see where the pavement ended and low and behold it was another FS road, #32 i believe it was called Patterson Gap. It was a pretty nice little ride with a couple more campsites that ended up over by Black Mtn state park, which we had never been to so we went, nice views, but other than that not worth the $5 to park. Now im just rambling, time for bed..  //btt//

FS 163 is near by and it's a fun relaxing ride and I never see rigs on it.

Jeeptrk, I agree, I think they did more damage than good.  We will see.

I take 163 on the way to Charlie's creek.  Coleman River road runs into a FS road, nice drive ( 1/2 mike past the road to turn to Charles creek off of persiminion, go straight and you will run into FS 32, Patterson gap. Sometime gates are unlocked to 32c ( actually unlocked, not broken chain)
