I was all set on 5.13's for my JKU but I keep reading that they are prone to breakage. I am currently runnin' 35's and may head up to 37's at the next tire purchase. Any advice from the brain trust?

I ran 4.88s in my D30 and Ford 8.8. I now have 5.13 in the prorock 44 and 60. I imagine the pinion looks like a small q-tip on the PR44...but so damn sweet while it is working. I'm running 38" BFG stickies, but I am pretty light on the throttle and I don't 'make it or break it'. I am looking to go PR60 up front eventually.
-
Well, this debate has been going on for years. I own a TJ and have run 4.88s on my old 30/35 combo with no issues. I now run 4.88s on my waggy 44 and scout 44 rear with no issues on 35's. If you are a heavy footed driver I would opt for the bigger pinion option. But with the lack of torque in the JK motors you would probably be fine on 5.13s and 37's. I think a few guys run that same setup. Tony, Bobby?

I will say if your going to 37's with the stock Dana 30/44 or even 44/44 you need to do a lot more to axles before gears. Trusses, C gussets, chromoly shafts. I am still running 3.73 gears because it's a bigger pinion and thicker metal on Ring Gear. When I go to bigger axles I will go 5.38 gears. I don't heavy foot the skinny pedal and also my Jeep isn't a daily driver but I don't have any complaints on driving it. Also with 37's be ready to buy Hydro Assist steering.
-
I've been running 5.38's for years in 2 JK's and never had an issue with 37's or 40's when they were on.
-
With a Dana 30 5.13 is the max
-
So a JK 30 can hold 5:13's?
I ran 4:56 in my TJ 30 and super 35 with 35'' tires
Now I run 5:13 in Rubi 44's with 37'' tires
-
In a previous Jeep I had 5.13s in Waggy D44 axles on 37s. Never broke any of the driveline, but it had a 2.5L.
-
I have 5.13 on my front and it's a d30. No issues yet
-
The current plan is to sleeve the front, truss the back, add Yukon Co mo axles, i already have C's and recently New ball Joints Thanks to Allsouth/Danny
Then regear (Yukon)and get ARB compressor/yukon Lockers front and rear....oh and get a beefy crossmember.....after that Fenders and maybe different sliders and then Steering assist when I get to 37's
I just want to make sure the 5.13's will hold up
-
I would truss the front before doing sleeves. A lot stronger.
-
@PHANTOM recommended a Sleeve, since the axle would be apart anyways...I am not sure which is best or strongest.
-
I have truss. Not done sleeves yet. I need to upgrade my axel shafts first
-
I would only bother doing one or the other.
I also wouldn't sink a lot of money in a 30.
Trust this statement!!! At the end you are still not big enough to do the big tires and too small to sell to some other sucker for nearly what you have in it. Ask me how I know :)
-
5.13 will be fine. Greater importance relies on proper set up for them to live.
-
I've been running the same setup for almost 2 years. I've got a heavy JKU auto on 37 mtrs. I've been trying to keep the components strong (within my budget) because I haven't towed yet. Currently working on that though.
Front:
PR44, 5:13, RCV, ARB
Rear:
Stock 44, artec truss, ARB, Ten Factory shafts
-
I'm running 4:56 in my PR44 up front and stock 44 rear n 35"mtrs and plan to jump to 37s next tire purchase.

I recommended sleeving the axle purely to save coin. It is a very strong option and you will already have the axle apart, so there isn't much labor to drill and weld. obviously we have several different trussing options too. Both are great options!

I appreciate everyone's input....like my wife was taught on her 1st ride with GATR at Beasley Knob, "they make replacement parts, when things break" and "don't worry about those plastic sliders, they'll rip off eventually"
I'm not sure who I need to thank for that but its probably Bobby or Tony. //SLAMIN//
