Title: Tires
Post by: Trailabite on March 27, 2017, 11:08:44 PM
Somebody school me on tires.

Are red label krawlers worth the money? Are they really like night and day difference between them and let's say Pitbulls or Irocks?

Yes, those and sticky treps and sticky mtrs grip dry rock much better. Noticeable difference to crawl obstacles others cannot. Soft and wear it get on the road, They wear fsst on red rock because it's Rock everywhere

Red labels seem to consistently be the best gripping, then treps, then others.

The red 42 on 20 is said to not be the same compound and not as sticky but they work very well and wear less

Reds are the best in pure rock. Not knocking a trep. I have had both. Reds are a lot cheaper as well.

Thread on hardliners recently about this exact subject.

KOH Backdoor Challenge this year: Treps, by a lot. Sure, good driver, perfect line, perfect rig...blah blah blah

I'm conflicted since I have some paid for 39 reds, but I drag over every pebble out there with the tons.   42 Treps are about 50% more expensive than the 39 reds, so it's hard to justify.  40 Treps are just slightly less expensive than the 42s.

I'd argue, size for size on the same vehicle, the reds only close the gap on 10% of obstacles, and we know throttle can overcome half of that.

What and where is the best deal you've seen on 42 Trep Stickies?

I found a set of 4 Krawlers Red label for $2k. 90% tread, 8 years old.

That sounded like too much money to me, so I looked around and I can get brand new set of 4 delivered to my door for $2350. Which is still a lot of money for just 4 tires lol.

42" treps are $3,000 shipped last I checked. I would stay away from 8 year old reds. The ozone makes them dry out and crack where the soft rubber meets the side wall. Low air makes that worse as well.

Interco is planning on releasing another run of sticky Trxus tires soon. I LOVED my trxus and were hands down the best rock tire I have ever owned but they did not like mud when tread got to half. Look into them, they might be cheaper.

Made a phone call this morning. The 42" is the same as the 39" and 37".

All of them went up about a month ago. Reds took the largest % increase.

39" reds are in stock.
42" reds they are saying maybe June but they have changed dates twice.
37" reds no production date as they say there is no demand.

They are trying to keep up with the kr2 and kr3 demand. They are saying reds could run out during the summer but depends on the kr demand and if they can keep up to produce reds.

Kr2 and kr2s are in stock.

Kr3 should be in at the end of the week. Kr3s should be soon to follow.

Interesting.  My info is from Larry McRae that is on the BFG team and got one of if not the first set for his LJ so that was way back a few years maybe now?  Time flies.
Who is your source?

I agree it should be the same, perhaps it was the feel of the smaller sidewall.Wait, its probably close to the same or bigger

I wish they would make it in 17s and not ust 20s.  Or do they now?

They don't make them in a 17". Here is my educated guess as to why: the sidewall of a krawler has more flex than any other tire. I think that along with the compound makes them work so well. With a 17" wheel, that's a lot of sidewall that would show. It may flex too much or would fold over itself.

They made a short run of kr2s 42" sticky tire that available. Again a 20" wheel. Bfg may know something the others don't about sidewall to width ratio.

If I had free tires showing maybe I would claim that...lol. I pay for them like the rest, so far from it.

Maybe BFG knows that much of their sidewall is to risky...sidewall cuts if you park too close to a root or rock  //popcorn//

Can't deny they work well though.

Whoa...I saw an Almighty PBR get taken out by a root recently.  I think the guy was on a Sunday stroll past it when it happened.

Well, Sunday Race Day Stroll

Edit: it was a radial

Reds are certainly a plus in dry rocks.  Takes a while for them to be broken in, and they seem stickiest at 50% tread.

I have a friend with the 37 sticky iroks. Better than a non-sticky, but I wasn't impressed. Had an opportunity to get them fairly cheap and I passed. Decent used reds are easy enough to find, and treps seem readily available new

Haha I just thought the pot needed a little stir. I don't claim anything for PBRs, if any allegiance I would have to go with Interco only because I have run more sets of them than anything...but they have been surpassed by all the competitors now

It's producing enough for a little bit. They have an issue keeping the kr2 and kr3 as they are priority. They reds they had on hand should have lasted till the end of April per forcast.

I don't know. I didn't ask their production schedule to expected sales charts. Sorry.

I can't view inventory. I only know what they have when I call.
