Title: Obtaining a Title for an Old Vehicle
Post by: BeerIAm on April 20, 2017, 10:23:33 PM
I have a car in my basement that doesn't have a title.  It is over 25 years old and the registration currently serves as it's title.  Does anyone know or have experience in getting an actual title in this situation?  I can't find much online about it and when I initially registered the car they told me at the DMV I couldn't get one and I never really looked into it again until now.  I was thinking about selling it and figured it would be easier with an actual title.  Is it possible?  And do you think it really matters?

From my understanding,  all the person should need is a bill of sale. Nothing more.

You will need to get a title for it before it sells. otherwise it could be considered stolen if you only use a bill of sale.

Last I heard, it has to be a 1987 or older NOT to have a title. But you need a bill of sale.

It's registered to me with an active tag and I drive it on the road (when it runs).  Since the car is over 25 years old it's registered as a non-title so the registration serves as ownership so I think.  Was just trying to figure out how to get a title since I've never had it.

It's a 73 and on the registration it says non-title.  Just figured it would be easier to sell if I actually had a title in hand.

Bought a cj 7 with a bill of sale only. Had a tag for it.

Ha.  You'll laugh but it's actually been fun to drive and work on and can fit in my basement.  I do want to get a picture of Don in it before I get rid of it.  (Also not 100% certain it will go but my wife wants it gone...lol)

No problem.  That's what I was trying to avoid people thinking by trying to get a title.
