Good morning guys,
work has kept me busier than i would like so i havent been able to get on here lately.
I just received my deflators yesterday, in preparation for Jeepfest.
When i get there and a trail ride happens, how will i know what level to join?
I think with my skills and configuration of the JKU i can handle an intermediate trail. I dont want to get myself in too deep, literally and figuratively.
Thanks.
I am looking forward to my first adventures (as the driver) on the trails and the obstacle course.
Have a great weekend and I hope to get out with you guys soon.

Several approaches to trail selection exist, here are three:
1) Do what similarly built vehicles are doing (there will be PLENTY of JKUs at this event!)
2) Go for the hardest trails, and if you struggle, don't do that the next time
3) Go for the easiest trails, and if you are bored, don't do that the next time
-
Thanks for the suggestions [cheers]
i guess my question is, how will i know which group to get in or which trail to take (will they be designated or labeled)
But the advise give is good advise!

Find the Jeeps with the same mods that you have. If you're completely stock, stay on the easy stuff. There are certain trails they won't let you go on unless you have certain mods (37's, lockers, etc.).

In years past you had to sign up for trails and they were assigned levels of difficulty. They may also say what the minimum requirements are (lockers, minimum tire size, etc)

Get your feet wet at the obstacle course and then decide how comfortable you are. That may drive if you decide to go for beginner or intermediate trails
-
Thanks guys, i think that is the advise i am looking for. I planned to tackle the obstacle course for sure.
Where do they sign up for the trail rides? Will that be an easy enough thing to find?
Cant wait to need a better reason to wash the Jeep
Have a great day and wheeling weekend
-
I don't think they sign up for trails anymore. You just show up & go.
There was only one trail they were particular on last year. It snaked down into the woods, crossed a small creek, up a pretty steep & loose dirt track trail covered in pine needles. It was 75 yardsish long. The bypass was just as bad. It was very offcamber.
When it rains (it rains every year), the difficulty goes up a degree, just like at the offroad parks.
The obstacle course is the funnest part of the entire event, IMHO.
The trails are great to get in the woods & find some shade.

You should come out and ride with us at Morris or Choccolocco.
We ride with 5-7 jeeps and it is a lot more fun than being stopped on a trail with 50 jeeps and not knowing why.
I try to go to jeep fest to visit vendors. Got my Bartact seat covers there one year. Show discount and free shipping.

Well he needs to go to Jeep Fest first since it's this weekend to get
his feet (tires) wet and see how crazy Jeeping is in a huge event.
Then come out to our ride and see how much better a club
set's up and handles trail riding at off road parks.
-
Exactly, just going to get the experience as a driver and really take it in as an owner now.
the obstacle course looks like a blast, and the vendors are a must and I am hopeful for some late Sunday deep discounts [hungry]
I will get out with you guys asap, and would love to be in a smaller group of people willing to teach me how to be better

Another great part of our club when we do
trail rides is, we have a drivers meeting about
9 am (always local time). We go over the days
plan and etc. There's never any pressure to do
trails your not comfortable doing. With that in
mind we always try to split into 3 groups.
1) easy
2) moderate
3) hard core

You also get some of the best spotters in the sport , many have had years of exp. and its really nice to see someone take care and concern of your rig like its theirs while spotting.
AND... I am going to ditto what kevin said. no one will make u feel bad, slighted or less if you bypass a trail or obstacle .
Its about being safe, and only doing what you are comfortable with. you also have a dam good team of mechanics in this group so pretty much nothing that can get broke will stay broke.. you know everyone will focus to get fixed, no one wants/likes to see a rig not on the trials .
-
i can tell you guys are salt of the earth kinds of people and i appreciate all of the support i have been shown so far. I have a lot to learn and i know i will feel "naked" the first few times, since i wont really know what i should bring or have for such an event. I will take it all in and learn quickly, and will learn how to spot so i feel like i am helping as much as being helped. I want to give back to the group as much as i can.
So i am ready to get the learning started.
Feet wet this weekend, wallet gets a purge, and then meet up with you guys ASAP.
Have a great weekend
I did just get a set of deflators and set them to 27 psi last night using my spare tire to set them. I am not sure how low i can or should go, so i figured 13-14 psi lower than everyday pressure would be a good start. Defintely dont want to pop a bead, and be "that guy"

Maybe it should say, nobody will make you feel bad unless they know your rig is capable then everybody will make you feel bad. Don't worry though bc that will come a lot later

Well, we do have some mean girls in the club. I personally know one that, if she is behind you and your plugging up the trail, she will be on the radio politely asking you to give it more gas.
But in all seriousness, we do have fun on the trails and most of us will go out of our way to make sure the "newbies" get the best experience they can when they come out with us.

I thought everyone had seen that movie? lmao The ribbing and jokes are part of it. We are FAR better than some forums where you get flamed for even introducing yourself, or any question really. Welcome, you've picked a good bunch. (for the most part)

I told someone on the trail that I'm always joking unless I start off my sentence with, "Muther f#@ker...... ".
We try to pull our weight but if we are of no assistance, we can always hand you a tool or beer.
Right Clarke?

thats generally how i start my sentences when i am irritated and serious ;)

You call it cluttering up someone's thread where as I call it engaging new members and making them feel like part of the group. I enjoy the quotes as well bc it allows me to see what people are responding to.

Ok I am going to add to this instead of starting another thread.
Just returned from JF. Completely different than I remeber when I was a passenger.
There were no organized trail rides. Just a map telling you where the trails were and how difficult they are. I did Grandview.
Ok so tell me if this is just me making something out of nothing or what. After I ran the obstacle course for a while, and I came down hard once after dropping over a pole. I didn't realize it was rutted out on the other side of and I thought I busted everything behind the back tires.
Anyway. When I got on the road to head to the trail a little bit later the ride felt a little different. The Jeep felt sluggish as though I wasn't completely in 2H and it felt like I could feel every pebble on the road.
Ran the course a couple more times before putting in park for a while. Still felt that sensitive ride until after I aired back up and got up to speed. Felt it again once I got off 75.
Just me?
Heading back tomorrow with my boys in tow.
-
I'm betting you flattened the muffler & vent a shock or 3.
Best thing to do is climb under it & so a damage assessment.

Thanks.
I made sure to get under it in a parking lot on the way to the trail and I didn't see any fluids dripping so that was good. Double and triple checked that.
I didn't see the muffler having any damage. I will inspect shocks in the morning.
Thanks guys.
Hoping to go through sandy bottom trail with my boys tomorrow

OK, Jeepfest was a success! tires got wet jeep got dirty, kids had some fun, dad now needs a second job to get many of the things he saw ;)
bumped along the obstacle course multiple times each day trying to learn a lot about what i can do and where the maximum flex will happen and when i will bottom out. wasnt brave enough to get stuck so i stayed away from a few lanes on the course.
All of the obstacle course made for a good warm up and learning time before hitting the trails.
Easier one on Saturday and slightly more difficult one on Sunday (sandy bottoms).
I am certain i need a little lift and some new shocks, and a winch (not bc i got stuck but bc i need a winch)
I think i am ready to head out with a small group and spend a day on a trail or two.
didnt think i would ever want to go above 33" tires since this is my daily driver, but 35" are trying to creep into my brain.
Hope everyone had a great long weekend.

@Nu2Jeeps wheel that Jeep as it is. Make sure you have an Oil Pan Transmission Skid Plate and some beefy diff covers and come wheel Morris with us. Seat time will tell you what mods you need to make and looking at others jeeps. Morris is close by and has camping or hotel options.

Thanks, I am cetainly going to put it on the calendar. I think it would just be a day trip for me. How eary do you guys begin on Saturday?

We typically plan for drivers meeting at 9:00am local time. Aired down, disconnected, etc.

I have it on the calendar, and will be there if my family trip (wife reminded me of the dates last night) to SC gets put on hold due to Dorian.
