I don't, but if it's really bad for the veteran (or the lady), you can get portable air conditioners at Lowe's and home depot to cool a room.

Once you bite the bullet, they're nice to have around for times when AC goes out...and during heat waves.

We have 2 units. One for upstairs and one down. The up stairs one is out. Our TV room and spare bedrooms are downstairs so all is good.

Good!  I was thinking Pops may like the heat since older people generally like it fairly warm.

Whats going on with it? One of the relays on the board for my furnace went out in January and I was able to figure it out with my multimeter. $75 later it was working good as new

I already installed a new control board and a capacitor. And, the unit is old and doesn't keep up in the afternoon heat.

I've replaced 2 (of 4) in the last 12 months.  Both were 18 years old.  I've been using A-Team for years.  I have one more to replace but it's for the built out attic so we're waiting because it's just storage.  We'll do that one next year.

I did one last year...whatcha want to know?

I use Home Comfort.  I imagine they're not the cheapest (nor the most expensive, based on quotes I received) and they don't offer lifetime warranties, but they're honest and dependable.  They may be too far from you, though.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200803/6ea69253b35c00096f0c5abdb08b5103.jpg)

Who's the best manufacturer these days? Years ago everything was Trane, are they still the best? Rheem? These are the only two I'm aware of.

We did our upstairs unit through Costco about 6 years ago. Lennox system with a Nest thermostat, works great. They use a local company called 4 Seasons HVAC. They do preventative maintenance twice a year to maintain the warranty. We have been happy with them. Price was better than Coolray.

Builder put in Rheem.  Replaced the first heat pump with American Standard (Trane Made in USA).  Replace gas furnace / A/C for first floor with Lennox.  Same unit for basement  They have a 10 year warranty.

We just did the same thing this past October. Got a Costco gift card that paid for my new tires on the Jeep. Very easy process and very professional installers.

Looks like you have all manufactures lol. At the end of the day the're probably all coming from a main manufacturer and these guys are just slapping their sticker on them.

Mine latest one was actually 2 years ago, not last year, for the first floor (above basement, under upstairs).  Below is what I got for a little over $5K.  I haven't had any issues, yet.

Downstairs Equipment:
Ac 4TTR4030
Coil 4TXCB003DS
Furnace TUDIB080A936

Warranty:
Home comfort will give two years on the labor.
Trane will give ten years on all the parts including both coils and the compressor. The heat exchanger will have twenty years from Trane.

My upstairs was done about 10 years ago by Casteel, but I can't remember the cost (more than $5K, I know that).  In year 9 I had a problem, that they came and fixed with no problems (10 year warranty).  Casteel quoted me ~$8k for the downstairs unit ($12K minus $4k), which was Trane, VX80 (heat), XR14 (cool; 2.5T), but with a 10 year warranty, but I couldn't justify the extra cost for a warranty I may or may not use.

EDIT:  I may have paid a bit extra to get the super filter system (uses a massive air filter that only has to be changed once every 9 months).  As with anything convenient, the filters aren't cheap.

Trane and Lennox are definitely not the same manufacturer.  My buddy in SC has been in HVAC for 35 years told me when we replaced ours that Lennox made very good units but sometimes parts are harder to get.

That's good. So far, the only company to call us back is the A team. They follow Comcast time schedule, should be here between 1pm and 5pm lol.

That is crazy.  My HVAC guy has always told me that the Nest tstats are crap and to avoid them  Now I know it's true.  Glad it was simple.

Damn...that deescalated quickly!

You went from thinking of spending multi thousands of dollars on HVAC to thinking of spending multi thousands of dollars on a Jeep.  Right?

Um yeah, I wish. But, to your point, I was reading to bite the bullet! The tech could come in and said, look, your compressor's out blah, blah, blah and we need to replace your unit and by the way, the new unit will come with a new t-stat as well.

I have an Ecobee 3 in the condo and love it. It's been a little over 3 years now and it still works right. I plan on buying one for the new place whenever we find it.

I’ve had two Nests for 6 years without an issue so all this is interesting to hear. I know the home/away feature definitely saves us some money.

Programmable t-stats have been around for decades, but they were much harder to program than an app.

Does Nest tie into your calendar or some other data source (web cams, sensors, your mobile device location, etc) to know whether you (or someone else) is at home?

It ties to your WiFi network and your phone so it uses your location for home/away. It also knows when you walk by it, so it figures out when you are home/away on a regular basis and what you adjust the temp to when you’re home. From there it self programs. That’s all adjustable.

Well so you didn’t actually troubleshoot the board to see it wasn’t getting voltage. Even a nest isn’t that “smart” it still just has a constant power, a blower call, a compressor call, and a furnace call. It’s not like it modulates voltage or anything - they’re all just strictly on or off

I changed the board out for another reason a few weeks back. Figured there was no reason to check it again since it was new. And I really didn't feel like spending time up in an hot attic again.
