Title: GA -> Yellowstone -> Moab -> GA Trip
Post by: Mortalis5509 on August 13, 2020, 09:28:38 PM
So we leave in the morning on a family trip to Yellowstone and stopping by Mount Rushmore on the way. Will be at Yellowstone for 2 days. Scenic route to moab. Four full days at moab and arches, then back to GA.

Thought I make a post and put up pictures along the way.

Cool trip.  You'll get to see the original Mount Rushmore, prior to the upcoming beautification.

Have a great trip and be safe!  You're going to catch the tail end of the Sturgis rally.  A lot of people go the week before and after.  The rally ends Sunday.

I rode my Harley out there in 2005 with a group of friends.  It was an incredible trip.

You might want to check out Crazy Horse as well.  I'm not sure they will finish it in your lifetime but definitely worth seeing.  They will not accept any government funds for the work which is honorable.  Just will take them longer.

In Arches, the hike to Delicate Arch is great...

If you have time, check out Canyonlands National Park, too.  It was maybe more impressive than Arches. You can be there in 30 mins going North from Moab.

Not much happened today. 16 hours or so and around 1000 miles and I'm in Omaha, Nebraska. Northwest MO has a lot of freaking corn

Mount Rushmore and then to Yellowstone tomorrow. I'm 8 hours from Rushmore. There's a shorter hike to Delicate Arch that approaches from the other side and ends at a deep canyon.  So you don't get to the arch but it still makes for a great pic.

Went across South Dakota and into Wyoming where we are at greybull. Stopped at Mount Rushmore and Crazy horse. Saw a lot of toy haulers in SD, and mostly pulled by Ford Diesels which was interesting. Interstate is 80mph out here. Slightly tagged a deer. It was dark and in the middle of the road. I went left into the other lane hoping he would go right. Nope, went left so I went back right and slightly nicked the deer. Nothing broken or hurt.

Mount Rushmore is really cool to see and Cazy horse has a long way to go. We will be at Yellowstone tomorrow. When my daughter and I visited Rushmore, we went to Crazy Horse on the day of the annual "volksmarch" in about 2006.  By donating cans of food for a food bank we could walk up to the sculpture and stand on what should become the arm.  In the time since it doesn't look like much progress has been made.

Lol, most of MO is corn, along with IL, IN and OH. It's very uneventful drive through those states.

This is my first screw up. Left the top of top of the world around 6:30pm and made it out at 9pm because of playing stupid games.

I went left to go down a ledge but didn't see it was a 3ft drop. It was daylight but just missed it.

Front dropped off and just hanging in mid air. I tried backinh up but the tires just dug to China because everything was nose heavy. Tried stacking rocks and got no where. The first rock I hooked up to started pulling me sideways which was a bad idea. The next 2 hook ups I kept moving the rocks. Finally I strapped up to 3 rocks and it worked out. Probably 45 minutes screwing off.

Pic make it look like I was being stupid, which I was, but this thing was all in the air. I was quick on pictures so it doesnt show a lot. Did fins and things and Strike Ravine

- fins is pretty straight forward. Gets eerie going because you see the sky only and then you cannot see the sides because it stops off.

- strike was cool because it ran through the mountains and mostly through a rock river bottom minus the water. Had a huge bolder in the trail and stuff enough room to get around without eating the body or rolling off. This trail came out in Area BFE which i didn't know and its closed down. Really nice trailers with area bfe on them in the parking lot. I have heard of the trail Black Flag and the entrance was nasty. Its a rear steer 42" buggy trail. Flat awesome. I thought BFE was closed...so it's great to see it's not.  BFE is freaking awesome!

It is closed but that trail i was on is still open because its owned by the state or county.

Did a lot of reading on bfe on forums tonight. Basically new guy bought others out. Wants to shutdown the trail I was on so he can get insurance. Build cabins, shower house, etc. Charge a membership, etc. Looks like bfe was bought a a while back to keep other landowners from shutting down the area.

You can wheel bfe on special events. Not sure what constitutes as a special event. Ultra 4 is having a race in BFE next month. Going live without spectators. Not sure the trails but I see  a lot of distruction going on depending on the trails. That cayon I ran wasnt wide but no huge borders. Ought to be crazy.

ok...that's good information if I ever get back out there, it'll be a special event :)

I remember seeing the mine when we were there, but never approached it.

There is so much there they could make it go from mild to wild (Britney Spears loop and Helderado (incl the upper section beyond the waterfall)).

Yes that is a famous area where GATR has got a lot of great pictures from over the years.

Did they rename Coyote Canyon to Strike Ravine?  I don't recall SR, but definitely 'member CC!

Coyote Canyon is a different trail close to but not on Area BFE.  Strike Ravine was a loop trail that was at the end of the easy trail that Britney Spears was on.

Ok...I recalled that trail, but didn't know the name.  Thanx.

Strike wasnt bad at all. There was a boulder that was in the trail close to a ledge made it fun to get around without taking the fenders off

Lauch pad on gold stike was a freaking climb. Solid tracking but 32 degrees or something....I really don't like roller coasters and that's what it reminded me of.
