Well two of my teeth are chipped! The tops of them look to be gone. What do yall think. Bad gear install or defective gears. I mean i have less than 1000 miles on these things. I called my installer and he is going to look at it ans see what is up.

It almost looks like where the teeth were ground down to get the cross shaft in. What made you decide to pull the cover?

I concur.

Yeah, but there doesn't look like there's any clearance issue with that big carrier. What gears are they Alex? Chris, did you have to shave the teeth on the 4.88s when you had them installed? There's so much room between the ring gear and the pin, I don't think there should be clearance issues with any ratio in the 8.8 ... :-\
-
They were definitely ground off though. They don't look chipped. :-\ Still doesn't look like the installer needed the room...

Yes.

Actually, 4.56's and 4.88's will have to be shaved if you choose not to pull the ring gear when installing the cross pin. Of course you could install a clearanced cross shaft.
-
Well then it's gotta be where the installer shaved them.... unless you've got metal trashed all in the diff :o {toast}
-
I hope so....i forgot that they needed to be shaved to get the pin in. I just need to call the installer and see what he says.
-
The diff is making noise and is getting really really hot. Hotter than i would have thought it would have.

Has it been broken in properly and have you changed the oil? Run some 85w140.
-
Any metal pieces in the bottom housing? Check with your finger in there and see what is on the bottom. That would tell you what is up. I think shaved. As for the heat, make sure you have enough fluid in it. Not like I am telling you what you already know. ::)
-
Well I just filled it up with 80w-90. This si the second time i have changed the fluid. I have about 800 miles on it. I guess it has been broken in OK...i drove it for about 2 weeks not over normal around town speed. I let is cool down in between trips about an hour or more. It didnt get driven long but it did make the trip to Clemson.

No big chunks found I assume? I bet it was just shved down. If no chunks I bet your fine. When I did my new rear gears I was told 500 miles. No more than 30 miles first time. Might be different for an entire axle.
