Can you guess what these 3 shapes will make??
We're extruding a pretty good amount of these
in the past few days.

I'll need to get a few of the middle one for some testing purposes. That's bad ass man!

If you dont mind explaining. I thought extruding formed hollow tubes and stuff like that. Those look like they would be cast or cut on a laser. What is extruding?
-
Hollow die are more used in soft alloy industry.
I worked for 22 years extruding in soft alloy
everything from automotive to carpet trim to
very complex hollows shapes. The strongest
alloy they use is 6061.
It is the equivalent of an adult Play Doh machine
It is a extrusion press that heats the aluminum
billets in 3 different diameters 22'' , 25'' and 29''
in lengths up to 72'' long an average of 750 degrees.
The tooling in which I'm in charge of is heated in die
boxes to 850 degrees. The extrusion press then pushes
the billet thru the tooling to make what ever shape
the customer wants. So the 2 gun shapes and the AR
bottom extrudes to a length of about 100' long.
After all our process's including ultra sonic testing
it goes to the customer where it is machined down
to their specs then cut to size.

Awesome stuff, Kevin. Were you in the video? I didn't see you, but I'm only halfway through.
-
No they didn't have me in it. They had a office guy
checking some tooling with calipers in one part....
Guess I wasn't video material.....LOL
-
So is it like forging?
-
No

I guess they thought you had a face for radio.

My railroad club gets aluminum rail from an extruder (not this one). The die has a hole in the shape of the rail cross section.
-
my old rockrail 'sliders' were extruded aluminum ( the only way they could produce 4door jku body curvature for them, iirc ) from teraflex.
it's a fascinating process to me

I thought I saw you sleeping under that desk
