anyone going up to tellico this weekend? im new to tellico and just checking.
-
I wish...
-
I thought about it but got to go up to Winder to help my brother move.
-
is there anything a newbie to tellico should know before going?
-
Dont go alone. If you do go alone have atleast one way to winch a stuck vehicle. Most trails are easy for a vehicle on 31's-33's but you can play around and get yourself in trouble on any of them.
-
Don't take the hard trails. :D Seriously though... don't go alone. I have and have been lucky everytime. Luck runs out eventually. Get a winch for sure and make sure you have tow hooks.
-
yeah i have a winch and hooks, anything else? my buddy that was supposed to go with me might not be able to make it so itll just be me and the wife. im hoping i can hook up with someone while we are out there that has been there before

If you've got a winch and capable rig, you should be able to do the trails, but I would not go out there without a trail map.
-
Just stay at a Holiday Inn Express the night before ;D
-
lol, plan on staying at crawfords
-
what's the specs on your rig, just out of pure curiosity
-
RE 4.5 with 4.5 springs, RE monotube shocks, rugged ridge rock crawler front bumper, RR rear bumper with tire carrier, RR rocker guards, superwinch 9.0, 33x12.5 MT baja claw radials and MT classic lock wheels, i have 4.88's just not installed yet.
and its on a 05 unlimited
-
More than rig specs... what driving expierience do you have? That place can eat you alive and get you into to trouble real quick if you are not up to par! Not saying anything negative but be careful. Rig sounds worthy. Get a map!
-
to be honest im a pretty big newbie, never been rock crawling, been to a place in sc called the gulches but not many rocks there, and yeah im pretty nervous
-
Well on that note... I would for sure try to link up with somebody! You do not want to go on schoolbus 11, helicopter or guardrail 12! Stick to trail 4,3,6 and 5. Trust me! Trails 11 and 12 are seriuos trails for a beginner and even veterans! Depends on what way you will be coming in but I would take 4 to fains ford out to 6 then maybe take 5 back to 4 and out on 4. If you get a chance to stop at schoolbus 12, just get out and walk up about 100 yards or so. It is rough! Good luck and write down some #s for some of us incase something happens. I am about 2.5 hours away.
-
numbers? you talking about in case i get in a real bad spot in the area?
-
Yeah, phone numbers would be good. One problem though. Cell phones don't work in 95% of Tellico. You should be able to hook up with somebody while you're up there to ride with though. Just don't be shy. If you see a group, just ask if you can tag along.
-
Yup! I will tell you as well, there is no real good place for phone signal either! I was lucky to get a signal at top of helicopter, sometimes guardrail too. Just make sure if you are staying at crawfords that you tell Danny you are headed out and if your not back by whenever than somebody knows where you are. Chuck at Tellico cabins is the closest for help if need be. Right before you hit trail 1 and cross the river he is on the hill cabin rentals. Good luck. My # is 770.826.2414. Stick to the trails I mentioned and you should be fine!
-
its in my phone now, thanks alot. ive done alot of looking at some of the pics on the internet and im excited but still nervous. some of the trails look pretty tough. krawler what was your name? yall know anyone going out this weekend and how many people are normally out there?
-
Name is Ben Greene. Not sure about who if anybody will be out. Last few times I went it was dead! Just be smart!
-
well lets hope there is someone out there. how much air should one let out when crawling?
-
also is there a site that i can see what trail will be open while i am there?
-
Air is optional. Try a few settings to get a feel for what you like.
Start about 8-12psi. Lower the better ;)

Edit on that map. The only part of 2 that is closed is the rock garden. You can take the dirt road all the way to the ledges but I would not alone! You will know what is closed. Everything has a gate or yellow tape.

thanks alot guys, is there any mud up there or is it all rocks?
-
if it rains then mud but not like mud pit style mud. Other than that, rocks and dirt, mostly rocks
-
Let us know what you think! ;D
-
If it's wet be careful. There are alot of silt traps and those things will swallow your Jeep. Wet and Tellico are not the best conditions. By the way, here are the closed trails... 7,8,9 and some of 2.
-
slit traps? you guys got any tips for a first time crawler?
-
Find someone to ride with or wait and go out with a group.
Go real slow ;D. The first time a lot of things will look impossible but they're not. Don't try anything you don't feel comfortable with and you will be fine.
Oh yeah silt traps are pretty much sand and are like sink holes. You will know them when you see them stay away from them.

well if anyone is going out there or if anyone knows of someone going that wouldnt mind me tagging along my cell is 843-441-1685 or 843-441-1750. ill be in the 05 TJ Unlimited with the shiny wheels, lol (i know, shiny wheels). it will be me and the wife. I got the Marine hair cut, hard to miss. thanks again for all the help. I cant get enough of how friendly the jeep community is. Name is Steven. Ill be checking here before i leave and before i hit the trails so any more input or advice is always welcomed.
GO BIG OR GO HOME!!!!!!
-
We have all been where you are. Richard is right though, slow and steady and you can krawl about anything. Just remember they call it rock krawling for a reason. Skinny pedal is for mud. Rocks don't give so remember where your low points are and steer clear. If need be have your wife get out to make sure you are not gonna rip your oil pan off etc! You will be fine. Man, I wish I could get up there! Love to show you around the place!
-
Just wanting to know if these guys ever checked in with any of you.
-
Nothing yet. Curious to here how it went. Would you agree with everything said? We took you up all the good stuff and you did awesome! But would you want to go up there alone being new to the sport and place... Nope! Hope all is well for him! If not I bet his wife will be all over him! :D
-
Yes I do 100%. I can see going with a group, but hell, even I wouldn't go without proper guidence. I had been following this guys questions. I had about the same ones, but I figured you guys would not lead me down the arong path. You could just get in a bind really quick and than you have your family with you to take care of? Not a pretty picture. Lets just ride it out and maybe they will give the forum a buzz soon.
-
Well, it's Sunday 10:06 and no word. Hope all is well with the guy!
-
hey guys, im back and nothing broke, maybe a little pride, lol. well im glad that i stayed at crawfords. i cant imagine a better place to stay at, Danny and his family were very helpful and good people. the trails rocked, cant say enough about them. i took Bens advice and did the 456 circle and took somewhere over 7 hours or so. i just took it slow and had my head out the door watching my tire placement. alot of the tougher spots i just got out and figured out my line and then hit it. lol and when i had to get out to pick a line my wife got out and waited for me to be in the clear. she had a great time also. i brought all my recovery gear and just about every tool i could think of, some food and drinks and set out up the mountian. i think the most hair raising part was having my right side up high leaning towards the edge of the mountian but it was a good rush. we also made our way partly up 11 to see guardrail and of course i didnt even think about trying it. Danny gave me alot of advice and answered alot of my questions i had. the campgrounds were amazing. we stayed in one of the small furnished cabins. the middle one exactly and it was a very confortable stay. i did take a pic of the trail closure sign so if yall are wondering ill post it. i was very impressed with my jeep. i know from the last lift that the jeep even stock and do alot but with all my new stuff it handled very well. it took some getting used to learning that just because the body of my jeep is tilted alot dont neccessary meen i fixin to flip. at first i got real nervous but i fell into my confort zone and had fun. thanks to yall for all the help. we are looking forward to going back again. of the subject but we drove the jeep there, about 7 hours and ill tell you what going up those mountian hills to get there i thought i was going to roll backwards, lol. seriously is this just me? had to downshift to 4th just to get up. 5th and 6th were a waste. it was like a rollercoaster, up slow and down fast. we got there fri afternoon and played at the grounds and then sat all day on the trails and then sun made our way to the gulches in laurnes sc and then when they closed finished up back home.
-
Go to hear your safe and didn't break anything. As for Tellico, the others on here will tell you, made me want to by more stuff for my jeep. I had built my JK over a span of 7 months before I got it off road, and Tellico was the JK's first test. These jeeps will do amazing things and with proper guidence/spotting, it will blow you away. We all need to link up again and go!!
-
Forgot to ask-
Let me know how Gulches is when you get a chance. Is it a seasonal establishment and any specifics on rules you can give. I have been to their website and looked around. If anyone else can chime in, please do. Possible road trip here if the timing is right? HINT, HINT. Doug, Ben, Chris, Mike, Tony, Anyone? Let me know.
-
Just say when.
-
when! Glad to hear you made it back in 1 piece! Good time for the wife is a major plus too! We will be back up there soon enough. I plan on wheelin that place till the last hours until they close it!
-
the gulches is a pretty nice park. its on the small side but no matter how many times i run the same trail i just cant seem to get enough of it. its a pretty big change from tellico. there are not that many rocks other than in the rock garden. there garden is not as long as crawfords but it is taller. the trails are mainly dirt and steep hill climbs. this was the first place i went to when i got my first lift and i still cant get enough. the risk of broken parts are alot smaller than at tellico. if you havent ever been i would say it would be worth it but i like to try everything at least once. if you have any specific questions let me know and i have a couple of pics from when i was there last time.
