Title: Anyone wear contacts?
Post by: BigJerm on September 29, 2008, 10:44:17 AM
Anyone here wear contacts? I have been wearing them about 6 years now but here lately it seems I have problems wearing them more than a few hours and the last 2 weeks I can't seem to wear them much at all. Sometimes they work, a lot of times things just get real blurry (mainly my right eye). It gets so bad I get a crazy headache. I had that going on this weekend at River Rock so I had to bring a bottle of contact solution and a bottle of over the counter pain killers.

This morning I was fed up, went back home and got my glasses. I figure maybe its this new pair I have and they just suck. But I also tried putting in my old pair while at home and things were not much better. So is it possible eyes can get to the point where they wont take contacts anymore?

Guess I should have spent more money to get new frames and transitional lenses for my glasses…

Just use the glasses. Makes you "look" smarter. ;)

Maybe.  It's possible.  But chances are that your eyes aren't getting the air flow that they need.  That could happen because your contacts are too restrictive or you're not cleaning them well enough.  Here are some ideas:

Your eyes change as you get older little by little and sometimes require more air or you may be developing astigmatism (sp?).  Mine were getting more difficult.  I got to a point where I couldn't use the extended wear and then I was having to go with the more expensive ones.  Eight years ago I said fawk it and I had my eyeballs zapped with a laser beam.  Perfect eyesight since then -- although chances are it will degrade in time.

Yeah I might need to request a different brand.

And Stigmatism.... O i got one all right... got it bad. Bad enough to when the doctors see my prescription, their first words are "OH, wow..."

I wear contact lenses when I am wheelin or riding my Busa. I hated transitional lenses. The transitional lenses would not get dark enough to be good sun glasses but just dark enough to make it hard to wrok on anything outside.

So to update…

I have had 5 pairs on contacts, all different brands, used different solutions… nothing. None of them work. They have ordered another pair of Acuvue (sp?) contacts because the doctor feels those should be the ones that work even though they sucked the first time around. If those do not work I will just get a good pair of glasses, some transition lenses and call it day.

At first I thought it would suck but living live the past 5 weeks or so in my glasses has not been that bad and these frames are not idea for active life. A better frame, glare resistant lenses and I would be set. No more having to worry with contacts, solution, or when I go camping having to worry about water to clean my hands to deal with the contacts.

Didn't realize that you were a pup! If you can qualify for LASIK I hear it's really good. I didn't qualify so I had the PRK surgery done. Unfortunately, I have not had good results with this. My eye is worst than it was before the surgery, but they claim they can fix it with another surgery. I go back on 11/26 for another vision test and if it has not changed then I get to do it again.

Chuck, keep me posted, I'm thinking of doing it after the first of the year.  Did they say why it was bad?  Did you do the mono vision/1 near and 1 far, or what?  I have an astigmatism, so I'm not sure what options I have right now.  I need reading bad, distance is beginning to fade.  Won't be long long they'll just poke in a new set of eyeballs!

Donna qualified for Lasik, she did the mono vision. We also paid for the lifetime warranty so as vision changes they will tweak as needed.

I was actually borderline for the surgery, I had an astigmatism more than anything else, but anyway they seem to think that they may have over corrected it when doing the surgery. The Dr. said it can sometimes take up to 3 full months for the eye to heal 100 percent with the PRK. And I only had one eye done for distance and the other is fine because it can only see up close anyway. But, if I get this eye working right I will probably go ahead and have the other eye done for distance and go to reading glasses, maybe.

So, how did the examination go?

So, how did the examination go?

Lasik will help my distance in both eyes, but my distance is not the problem as it's still good.  If I did the Lasik, I would have to wear reading glasses, but the only way Lasik takes away my glasses is to go with mono-vision, as I had feared.  One eye far, and 1 eye near.  Lasik will need updates in the future at considerable expense.

Dr. Woodhams now does lens implants on 50 and up.  I'm 47, and he said if I wanted it he would since I'm so close.  Higher risk, as 1 in 1200 has a complication, and vision may never be better.  They do 1 eye, let it settle in 2-3 weeks, and then the other.  Advantage is that it's done, and never needs to be done again.  Dreamy.  Lens implant is good for everyone eventually, as the natural lens becomes hard, and foggy, know as cataracts, usually after 60.

So Lasik is a waste of money for me, and I'll do lens implants next yea, or the next, or....  The longer I wait, the better they get, and the lower the complications % goes.

How much you ask?  An arm and a leg for 2 eyes.
Lasik $2350 per eye.
Implants ~$5000 per eye.
(My mom is 80 and pays $1300 per eye for implants next week, medicaid, damn government   ::))

Holy cow.  I don't know what went on with the prices on lasik.  I had mine about 8 years ago and paid $1500 total.  And that is with bad vision and astigmatism in both eyes.

I'm probably talking to the most advanced and most expensive practice.  Lasik has improved, and the latest cost more.  They don't laser the exterior, and they don't cut a flap with a blade.  They use a laser that penetrates evenly around the eye to make a flap so that there is less tearing and less risk and faster healing.  Nest stuff.  Big $.
