How much would you say a trail rig only... say XJ... kinda cut up, 35's at most, some armor, cage, and a 1 car trailer weigh... say under 5k lbs maybe?
-
Depends on the trailer. That XJ is probably around 3500 lbs or so (I'm guessing here, please correct me if I'm wrong). So, that would be 1500 lbs for a trailer. The biggest thing though is not the pulling, its the stopping.
-
I've heard closer to 4k for an XJ with all the goodies.
-
well trailer brakes are a must! Just curious if the liberty could pull (and stop) a trailer. Meg wants a trail rig once we get a house so seeing if it is possible... Tow rating on the 2007 liberty is 5k.

I wouldn't tow a vehicle with a vehicle thats roughly the same size. My buddy towed his XJ to Tellico with his WJ. Front brakes on the WJ caught on fire in the mountains. He peed on the wheels to put the fire out, lol.

Wouldn't even consider it, XJ's would go easy 4000 lbs. trail ready.

yeah, not a great idea. get a tow pig, you can find em cheap if you keep your eyes open. a diesel will run 5, 6, 700,000mi before a rebuild if its taken care of so dont let miles scare you away.
-
Well crap... Oh well, thanks guys! I am no expert on towing so I figured I would ask before any real plans got made
-
1/2 ton truck with electric brakes at minimum!
-
The Tahoe does fine with a TJ and a trailer with good brakes.
The 2500HD didn't even know the trailer and Tahoe were back there.
-
Would it be better with a TJ/YJ? Not sure there is enough weight difference there to matter... Sucks the JK is only rated at 3K...
-
Wow, I would have figured the JK could out haul a liberty, go figure. I would much rather try and pull a trailer with the 4 door jk.
Durango was a good hauler. Pulled a trailer and full size truck several times without fail.
-
Wheelbase is the key. I towed a 3000# pop up about 10 miles and had to peel my hands off the wheel. It was not fun!
-
I pulled our boat this past summer with the TJ and it did ok, It locked up my lock right real tight when I pulled up the ramp. Good thing I am only 4 miles from the lake.
-
Yeah man the JK tow rating is low... I well, if we can't tow a trail vehicle with what we have then I won't worry about it. I don't have the cash to have a KJ, JK, tow pig, trailer and a trail vehicle!

Matt,
Just out of curiosity, what kind of boat do you pull with your Jeep. The reason I ask is I just got my pontoon boat and will be taking it out this year. I have an 05 Crew Cab 2wd GMC Canyon and an 81 Silverado 2wd to choose from for pulling duties. The obvious choice to me is to use the 81 Silverado due to weight, size, and power of the truck but I would like to have the extra seats in the Canyon to take people along. I guess I'm just wanting to know what type of boat/weight you pull and how it handles it. My biggest concern with the pontoon is not so much weight but drag.
Thanks.
-
Its an older Regency. Probably in the 17-18 foot range. My guess about 1600-1700 lbs for the boat, another 800 for the trailer. Roughly I would say around 2500lbs total weight. I have a 2.5L, 4.10 and 32s when I was pulling. Put it in 4 low on the ramp to make things easy on her.
-
Sorry for the hijack but I take it your's is a fiberglass/bowrider type boat?
-
I've pulled a jetski behind a golf cart, I don't see the big deal :P
-
That would actually be an awesome sight.
-
Its how my friend gets her jetski in the water at her lake house. Does a pretty good job getting it done.
