Title: Will this work?
Post by: Metro on June 12, 2009, 04:39:23 PM
I went to Lowes and put together some basic hardware to mount my Hi-Lift to my factory roof rails.  Do you guys think the roof rail is strong enough to support the lateral force that could come from the jack?  It seems pretty sturdy.  I was thinking that if they can support those huge roof racks, it should be OK.  I think I am going to mount it on the passenger side though so it doesn't stick out on the side.

Here's what it looks like:

I have seen people use stock Jeep roof rack rails before to mount hi-lifts and they seem to hold up pretty good.

x2 Should be good. Might want to get a little longer bolt though based on that second picture.

Looks good and I figure it'll hold.

I agree, I can't really tell how much room you got between the foot of the jack and the rail, but buy longer bolts or grind down the spacers on the bolts.  Less likely the wing nut will come off.

Maybe it is just me but that looks like a lot of leverage on the thin plastic rails.  It will more than likely be fine but i would keep an eye on the mount and make sure it isn't breaking.

Yeah I do not know how I ended up with 2 bolts of different lengths but I did.  I blame it on Lowes having the wrong size bolt in a bin and me not noticing.  Lowes' fault :) I have already found some bolts that are going to work better I think.

The rails are actually steel.  They do have plastic around them though.
