Title: DURHAMTOWN 4X4 AREA CLOSED UNTIL SPRING 2010, IF THEN
Post by: DOUG on November 22, 2009, 05:55:20 PM
I read today that Durhamtown 4X4 area is closed until Spring 2010.

Story is that the recent floods made a mess of the trails, and then the local buggy boys rutted them all out, so they are mostly unpassable.

Also heard they are considering making it hunting land again and dropping the 4X4 park part. Sad, cause it could be THE place to go in GA if he would bring in some rocks.

Anybody else hear anything?  Might call Mike next week.

There's plenty of natural granite around there if they could find it exposed. My roommates hunting land is right near there and they have tons. I could hear the trucks all weekend too. Might have something to do with it  ::)

Well, last time I went it was pretty pitiful anyways.  However, it does suck that they might be considering closing it, 'cause we need all the local parks we can get.  Shoot, we need ALL the parks we can get...

I didn't think the 4x4 section would last long. The only time I went down there it was pretty lame and I thought I seen a few mini vans on the trails. {hihi}

You're not kidding.  The 4x4 section was pretty lame.  And judging by rumors of it being closed, apparently it hasn't gotten any better.  I wouldn't have wanted to put time and effort into something only to close it down.  I'm not sure whether it's voluntary or if they're being forced to close it down though.

SSG and HHI, lets just plan, task and set up contingencies. HHI was talking about URE and Gulches. If we can get guys on the ground to assess these places and build threads on them, I think the T/O's would be receptive. This would just add more variety to rides. As it stands, i will miss all rides with maybe the Moab being a possibility. Again, I can't see into the future that far in advance. If Tony is up for it, he can recon those parks and report back. Hate to sound like a team leader here but it seems that parks are stating show a trend ....shutting down! If I am out of line by this suggestion please jump in. Imagery on google earth is one thing, but on the ground scale pics would help as well. TJ/Seth hit me on Facebook and spoke highly of the last ride GATR did. The pics were great and everyone's input helps. Chime in!

This thread definitely throws a wrench in our plans G but we can improvise, adapt and overcome! lol
We can make another thread about it but yes, I will recce URE or Gulches and maybe even both but I have heard great things first hand from reliable sources that have been to a lot of places. I haven't heard much about Gulches but the stuff I have heard has been good.
I would like to hear more about this D town topic and if it proves true, let's just call it out and move on.
For now, I will start a thread titled URE ( Uwharrie ) Vs Gulches with a poll and see which place wins the hearts and minds of the infidels. lol

I don't see anyone blasting Mike.  He's a great guy.  Their just saying what most have been saying about the 4X4 park since it opened.  He has other priorities, but was was good enough to open an area for 4X4's, and a lot of stock guys love it.  It could be awesome, but I don't think it's a priority for them, or ever going to be.

I wonder why someone doesn't open a park in the mountains of GA, like they have in AL and TN.  Couldn't be that different.

Doug, I have been thinking the same thing for a while now. But the problem,( at least where I live in the mtns), is that if someone actually owned enough land to build an orv park, then they wouldn,t get approval for it because everything is near a stream or river and we all know that there's alot of people who don't like the idea of runoff in them. Most landowners around here only have small tracts and all the big tracts are forest service, and we all know that they aren't gonna make us a orv trail. It is a great idea though and I will keep my hopes up.

Hey Rabunjeeper,  have you ever checked out the forestry trails around Tiger? I was supposed to go last fall with some Land Rover buddies, but something came up. They wouldn't stop talking about those trails for awhile.

yep, sure did, every weekend until trout unlimited stepped in, it was called stonewall falls. I live 2 miles from it. They had a quick hearing about it and said that the road served no public purpose and they closed it permanetly about 4 months ago. All over one creek crossing. And man it was an awesome trail, big ruts, undoable hillclimbs, and some nasty mudholes. Ga cruisers have afew videos on you tube of it.

I personally don't remeber anyone blasting Mike. I've got nothing against the guy. It's just I know that the 4x4 section of Durhamtown wasn't too challenging lots of simple stuff. I'm sure for a stock or new guy it would be awesome. But you could definitely tell that priorities were aimed at the dirtbike/ATV side of the park. I would personally thank the guy for having an ORV park in the first place. If it's doing nothng but costing him
money, I don't really suppose I can blame him for wanting to close it, in these times especially if that's actually what's happening. If he's being forces to close it then there's not much he can do anyways.

If some has been to a park, and has an honest opinion about it, I feel it should be shared. No one is taking your ability to go to that park away and check it out for your self. If you like then share your opinion why. I have read every post in this thread and not one single person has said anything about Mike.

Any good business owner would love to get feed back and learn where to improve. If you dont listen to the consumer your business is destined to fail.

BTW I dont see any parks endorsing this club, so why should we be mute when it comes to voicing an opinion about any of them. We try all parks in the area, if its an unsuccessful ride then it will probably not be on the calendar as much the next season. We do our best to listen to the members here to make sure each of our rides are a success.

ALSO NO MODERATORS HAVE BEEN DELETING ANY POST! SO MAKE SURE YOU HIT THE POST BUTTON AND IT SHOWS UP. IF YOU GET A RED SCRIPT AT THE TOP OF THE PAGE, THAT MEANS SOMEONE HAS POSTED BEFORE YOU. YOU WILL HAVE TO RESUBMIT YOUR POST.

For me, Durhamtown didn't offer enough for me to go back.  That's all I'm saying.  If you don't wanna hear it sorry.  I know other people have went and enjoyed the crap out of that place, which is awesome.  I'm glad they did.  But I'm not gonna lie and say I had the best time in my life there 'cause I didn't.  Seems like everyone that was there when I went shared the same opinion.

The last time I went to D-town with a buch of rock crawlers guys we didnt find it to our liking.. We enjoy the crap out of rock crawling and didnt see where D-town offer us that much.. For the stock jeepers or the mudders out there I am sure that D-town would be great fun for them....

That is how to use TACT...

I went to D-town and had a great time... they even came out and got me unstuck and didnt charge me for the welder use either..

Because we are not all rock crawlers or stockers we have to make sure that the place we plan to attend for the monthly ride is going to have a good mixture for both crowds, thats all. When it comes to opinions around here TACT is used seldomly.
