Title: NP231 - 23 SPLINE from 03 Wrangler - SOLD
Post by: Matt on July 28, 2010, 03:30:53 PM
As the title states. This transfer case is out of a 03 wrangler with 4.0l & 5 speed. Approx 100k on it. I have opened it up and everything looks good on the inside. I bought it to take the SYE off and install on my 21 spline case, which  I did.

SOLD

I was thinking the AW4 is 21 spline. Can anyone confirm or deny?

'94 should be 23 spline ( I think), I was thinking all the AW4's behind the HO motors were 23 spline, but I'm still learning this XJ stuff.

Then it should be 23 spline.

It is apart at the moment, but yes it has the stock output shaft, it will be back together before he picks it up, unless he wants me to leave it open so he can check it out or is installing an SYE. It only takes about 10 minutes to assemble. Let me know.

unless you do what I did and forget to put the oil pump in after youve already rtv-ed it all back together. one of those, "wheres this thing go," moments.

the transmission from your TJ should have been the NV4500 correct? this would not be the 23 spline input? 32 i think... BUT if it was the AX-15 then its the long 23 spline input shaft... can only be used in the AX-15 jeeps... the AW4 was the medium length input shaft... also a 23 spline... ALL 4 bangers were the 21 spline as well as 91 (i think) and older cherokees... if its the AX-15 then it will not work in the 94 cherokee... but i just did a AX-15 swap in my MJ and am looking for a 23 spline long input... which may be what you have and ill buy it up from you... to the guy with the 94 cherokee i have a np231 from a 89 cherokee that only has 90k original miles... it has the 21 spline input but you can swap the input from your original bad transfercase into this one and have a low miles NP231 with the proper input shaft... 90% of the time your input shaft will be fine even if the transfercase grenades...

ask me why i have a 21 spline NP231 for sale and need a NP231 23 spline long output... AND know all this information... trying to save you guys the headache and get the part i need at the same time... lol... let me know ASAP... cash in hand as this is what im waiting on to get it running... also join us at cherokeeforum.com... im a Mod over there and lots of great info and help!!

Everyone told us it would fit so my brother bought it this morning. Can we take the input out of our broke t case and put it in the one we bought from Matt? I was really hoping it was a bolt in deal. I even started a thread on pirate about it and they all said that all we need to change was the speed o and the shifter. Houston, we may have a problem!  {ehm}

lol... i emailed you that link to the information... it does state there are three different input lengths foor the 23 spline transfercases... whether or not they still bolt up and work anyways i dont know... but im sure lack of teeth touching on each would come into play if wrong... and even the seal may not seat if you run a short input on a tranny made for the long... or something like that... not saying they wont bolt up but i would think the potential for blowing up again would be higher...

i have the one you would need other then the input shaft from your bad transfercase... i still got that one with like 80k on it only... if you swapped the input shaft from your old one which from what ive read its a easy 30min job... then youll be golden... This TJ one you have is clocked different then the XJ's and im not sure if the long input would work with the automatics... even if i got the one your have i would have to re drill the hole to clock it back down for my XJ which i dont think would be to hard unless i screwed it up... so i guess its u to you... whatever sounds easier... reclocking your new one and "maybe" installing your old input shaft and planetary gears or installing your old input shaft and it bolting on... up to you man... you beat me to this one fair is fair lol... just my luck cause i looked at every other forum and website for one and then come here to see one sold the same day... lol...
