im trying to decide between buyig some 31" tires or perhaps a 2.5" suspension lift from pro comp first? highschool budget sucks  :'(
Title: Re: help
Post by: Krawler00 on October 12, 2010, 01:18:50 PM
I would buy tires then the lift. Tires are 90% of wheelin. That and stay out tha mud!
Title: Re: help
Post by: Calvin on October 12, 2010, 01:36:39 PM
Yea... tires first if you're thinking tires vs lift. And depending on how much you wanna cut, and how big o tire you want--you can get away w/o a lift for a while.

Mud is fun for a while when you're starting out, but as you build (unless you build for mud) you'll start to avoid it like most of us.

Mud is the plague!!

Skip 31s, if you have money for 31s you can afford 32s or 33s.

im thinking about doing maybe 33's by 11.5? anyone know a good tire that fits on stock tj rims(15's) that isnt goign to break the bank? i already have my flares off so i think i can get away with 33's and perhaps new shocks?

Call jeremy and Danny at Allsouth and tell them you need the gatr deal on some tires. I think the Maxxis
Bighorn is priced right with an aggressive tread but they may have something even better.

It may be priced right for a big name tire, but from the sound of it he is on a real budget.
See if you can find a place that sells the "Federal Couragia m/t" I picked up a brand new set of 31x10.5 for $525 mounted and balanced 2 years ago. They're a stout and aggressive tire for the price and had better traction in slick conditions than the other cheapo tires like the Dunlop Mud Rover.

preferably minimal due to my father being uptight about my jeep. i found a pretty good deal for a set of 32's at All South, thinking about doing them.

A buddy of mine had them on a 4 runner was pretty decent. I think he had 12-15,000 miles on half tread. I may be a little off but they are nice for the $$$

PS I love my chineese swampers. {toast}

Dem chineese tars?
Some where in Asia
Any experience withum?
In the 31x10.50 flavor.... On a very wet day at Gulches they were biting way better than the Dunlop Mud Rovers of the guy I was wheeling with.
How long will they last?
Not sure, My welded rear end effects the wear too much even on expensive tires. I also sold them after 3 months to upgrade to 33's

lol at the edit :P

AllSouth quoted 730 for a set of 4. my friend works at a tires store by discover mils and can get me a set of 33's for under $600. not sure about the quality though.

Post by: BigJerm on October 13, 2010, 07:01:54 PM
who makes them? Maxxis Bighorns are a great tire as Richv suggested. Look at those too, they run pretty cheap on price.
Title: Re: help
Post by: Penatzer93 on October 13, 2010, 07:05:26 PM
yeah i saw a set of 33's at allsouth today when i took my jeep in. im having it bedlinered because the mud ruined my carpet, and i really liked the bighorns.
Title: Re: help
Post by: DOUG on October 13, 2010, 07:11:21 PM
Lay that carpet on the drive wayu and pressure wash it carefully, or at the carwash.
Then spray with foaming carpet cleaner, scrub with a stiff brush, and hang on the fence to dry.
Like new and will still retain most of the custom fit shaping.
I personally don't care for bed liner on anything except a truck bed but it should give yopu insulation and tyou can run the carpet over it if you want to.
Title: Re: help
Post by: Penatzer93 on October 13, 2010, 07:22:18 PM
the carpet was from the previous owner and he glued home depot junk onto the floors. bed liner has to be better than that stuff, as the carpet glue was starting to mildew.
Title: Re: help
Post by: richv30 on October 20, 2010, 04:06:38 PM
take it out & leave it out ! herculine the interior . that way you dont have to worry about the carpet at all . you can  get it at autozone pretty cheap.just my .02

You're not going to to want anything bigger than a 31 x 10.5 if you're not going to lift it at all.  But a budget boost would get you enough space to fit 32's.  And 10.5 is as wide as you can go on those stock rims.  Backspacing can be a bitch with the wrong tires.

I'll second those Maxxis Bighorns.  A buddy had some of them and they would dig holes anywhere.  They grab like a mofo!

Good luck with your new shoes whatever you pick!

Never heard of them {ehm}

You can run 30's with no lift on a YJ, even with sagged out springs. What ever you do DON'T go over a 1" Body Lift. You can get a cheap lift from Rough Country and it will come with every thing you need. (I have used one of their YJ lifts before) Not my personal preference but my budget was very thin and it was a complete lift. The springs flexed good but they also sagged. They supposedly are using different springs now. If you plan on keeping your YJ it's a good place to start, and as you figure out more of what you want and build it as you go. I am a firm believer in BDS springs and lift components, they have a No Fine print replacement warranty. I run a 3.5" on my YJ and it rides much better than stock, I put a 2.5" on my wifes YJ it rides about like stock it's stiffer than mine. I also have YJ 3.5" springs on the front of my XJ all are BDS. I know you didn't ask so I will get off the soap box now. Good luck on however you choose to go.

X2 on the body lift 1" max.  Causes all kinds of other issues, and looks bad too.

Me either.  Made in China.  Here are a bunch of reviews.  great price.

Can't go wrong with BDS for a YJ kit.

Get a Rough Country from Allsouth, and bolt it on.  2.5" and 4" are the same price.
