Title: 5.9 cummins
Post by: MACHINE on October 20, 2010, 07:37:38 AM
Looking for a 5.9 cummins, preferably a 24 valve to go in my tow pig. If interested,  I have a 2003 6.0 vortec from a Yukon denali. Also have the transmission and t case which is full time awd.  I will need a automatic trans to go behind the Cummins as well.

Safe yourself some headaches in wiring and injection pump failures and get a 12 valve. ;D

Do you by chance have one lurking around? It wants to go in my '87 4x4 suburban! I'm open to a 12 valve if I can find one.

If I did I would probably be swapping it out with my 24 valve about now. {toast}

Thanks Logan... ill look around some.
Mark, are the 24 valves really that bad?   I always thought they were pretty good engines. They can produce some serious power and torque and still get decent fuel mileage. Well, almost anything gets better than my old beater 'burb!

No they are a great engine, I actually love mine, bought it new in '01. It's giving me some intermittent over charging issues right now, but has served me great for nearly 10 years, and I have no thoughts of getting rid of it in the near future. The older 24 valves like mine do have some issues with the VP44 injection pump, I had mine changed under warranty at 100,000 miles. The 12 valve would be the easiest to swap due to it's 2 wire hook up, they can make some really impressive HP/Torque also with some low budget mods. Drew or Kyle could give you some good advice, Drew is really smart about his Cummins stuff, but who knows if he will ever sign back on.

How much wiring is involved with the 24v?  If I'm Not mistaken, there are different years of the 12v that are either a better engine itself, or produce more power. That may just be in the injection pump though.

Cumminsforum.com...read up.

Best year 12v to get will be the later ones, 96-98, as they had the 215hp p7100 pump. The first gen 12vs came with the ve pump and are still decent but cant produce the power the p pumps can. As mark said the 24 valves have the vp44 injection pump which is not a terrible pump, it is the lift pump that will fail and starve the injection pump of fuel and then it will burn up, at a nice $1200 replacement cost. You can delay the failure for a while by getting a FASS system and a fuel pressure gauge. The other good thing about the 12v is that it is cheap to get power. buy a $30 fuel plate and almost double your power, of course you'll need gauges and a new clutch to monitor/support this extra power. Since the 12v is a fully mechanical diesel there are very few sensors/wires that are required, making it ideal for an engine swap. Long story short, stay away from early 12v, 24v and any 5.9 cummins that is a 53 block. Any other questions, just ask. Cummins forum will be a great resource for you to learn and ask questions, just make sure and do a search and read up on the newbie articles before you start asking how you can make your cummins fast and roll coal, etc.

12v vs. 24v cummins swap... think like a OBD2 350 swap vs. a carb'd 350 swap... there is alot thats different... youll need a whole harness and all... the 12v is prefered for swaps and power... talk to jeff garmon at garmons diesel... hes here in Griffin... builds them all the time... had one in a YJ right now... although its kinda ugly.... hes selling it... could buy it for the motor and tranny and axles... all are from a 94-98ish cummins 4x4... its on a cummins frame actually... but call around man... mitches automotive had a cummins sittin in there yard for awhile but not sure if its still there... the 12v is swapped into your body style truck all the time...
