Title: need help with fabrication-ish stuff
Post by: Penatzer93 on October 26, 2010, 06:17:07 PM
Hey so i'm thinking about buying a 3 inch body lift for the time being, as I cannot yet afford the suspension lift and i was wondering if anyone would be willing to help me instal it on a weekend some time. I'm not sure exactlly what will be needed yet however I assume it will be a welder and a cutter of some sort(which is where the problem comes in, I neither have nor know how to use either of those.) would greatly appreciate it :)

The body lift should be pretty much just bolt on.

The LJ had a 3" and it looked horrible and was top heavy. But if you are set on it get the rugged ridge kit I guess. I took it off the LJ and it came with everything needed. Lift blocks, radiator drop brackets, transmission shift linkage bracket and tube to extend the gas filler neck.

I would rather see a set of 3" shackles than a 3" BL.  {whack3}

To get 3" lift with shackles on a YJ the shackles would be 10" long :o, that aint a good option. For about $150 you could do a 2" add a leaf and 1.25 lift shackles, or save just a little more and put a Rough Country Suspension lift on. Christmas is just around the corner, start sucking up and doing Mom and Dad some favors. ;D

X2 on the body lift... and the sucking up  ;D.

If it were me, I'd start saving for the Rough Country.

If you do find someone willing to help with fabrication, maybe look into a SOA.  They net 4.5" to 5" of lift.  I do know they have a problem with rear axle wrap, but that is all I know about them.

Mark, you other YJ guys... Pros and Cons of a SOA??

I agree there is no point in buying parts twice. I am an expert at that. If you are set on a body lift, just get a 1" BL and save for some suspension mods, like the add a leaf and shackles.

Yeah after having talked to a few of you already about the lift option, body lift is seeming mre and more like a bad idea.

The SOA option, can you convert stock sprigs into soa and then buy new shackles and shocks or is that just a terrible idea?

The add a leaf, I've heard that this makes bumps almost unbearable in yj's, but at the same time if my springs are sagging will it just restore my factory suspenion or will it still provide a lift? {ehm}

Yes, there is more to it than that though. You will need a slip yoke eliminator, a traction bar to combat axle wrap, and will need to do something about the steering. With that much lift, the stock steering will be sketchy at best.

Okay so soa =bad idea for beginner.

Does the 4"rough country lift provide EVERYTHING needed or would I still need to buy parts for the steering and such?

It's enough stuff to make it work, but you're probably not going to be too happy with the ground clearance of a transfercase drop.

But it will be better than what you have now.

BTW my transfer case is still dropped and I don't have a SYE.  Just haven't gotten to it yet  ;D.

It's mostly a personal opinion thing with that. As an LCG guy I'll go to great lengths to to have as little hanging down as possible, because I'm so low. Speaking of that, I believe it's time for a gas tank relocate and crossmember shave, both have self clearanced themselves quite a bit at this point.

If it's "Posilock" and not a spinoff brand I know there is no issue. I had a hard time routing mine in my YJ because the cable was so dang long, but yes you can always reroute it if you have it mounted where the cable is tight. Where is yours mounted, and how do you have the cable ran in the engine bay?

ill post a picture later on but i have it mounted right next to my ash tray( no ac so basically right over my transfer case) and it has one loop in the cable by the engine.

Sounds like the same place I mounted mine. You will be fine.

Allsouth?  They will beat any deal you find usually.

I had a 3'' body lift on my old K-10 and it was a pain in the arse. the gap between the bed looked bad as well. I had an el cheapo kit and has to do some floor cutting to clear the shifter for the np205 t case and the sm465 tranny. Since I was into the whole mud thing back then, the body lift only did one good thing. Made it easier to wash mud from the bottom of the bed. I've got to agree with the other guys when they say 1'' max.  Btw, you'll find out pretty quick what mud does to all the seals in your rig. Mine constantly marked its territory wherever it was parked.

yeah i was thinking allsouth, but i wont be able to afford to have them instal it so i may still need some help if anyone would be willing when the time comes.

I am trying to get away from the mud, and have been for some time now. the last time i didt wat to go into it in the first place, my friend was leading ad had no idea where he was going which is the only reason i even went.  8==D

You may want to check out iron rock offroad for some goodies. I've got the 8" long arm kit for my XJ and it's pretty beefy. They sell all sorts of lifts in whole kits or just simple upgrades.

They give some pretty serious discounts to GATR members on labor.  Run it by them and see what they are asking before you write it off as too expensive.

They beat all comers on price for my BDS lift.  After installing it myself (with the help of some friends) it would have been worth it to let them do it for their price.

yeah i know they give great discounts for us, knocked off 25 per hour first time i went up there then didnt charge me for the adidtional time it took to finish everything. problem is that im going to have a hard time getting the money for the lift alone :(
