I am about to close my account with these :fu( due to them about to implement a $5 a month charge to use the debit card. Seriously... do these companies not get that we are struggling enough to keep the lights turned on and food on the table??? I am getting sick of all this crap. Maybe I should bury my $ in the backyard like the good old days...

Good Luck Ben everybody is charging for a debit card fee.
I just switched from wells fargo cause they were the first to start charging.
I am currently with BOA and have thier premium account which they told me would not be affected by the debit card fee. Since there is a $25 charge for the account each month already. But I dont pay that fee its included in the special agreement I got
-
Thats why I stay with the small banks so I don't have to pay all those fees of the large chain banks.
-
I heard Clark Howard the other day and he suggests going to a credit union as they do not charge fees. I already have an account with Ga Power so I will be moving all of my stuff over to them. Credit unions are the way to go... or so it seems. But yes, it seems every company is charging an additional fee for something. But I am just fed up with getting the same service for everything and now paying more... for WHAT?! So some fat A business suit jack wad can buy another yacht with my hard earned $. Even netflix is bending people over with their new prices and seperated system. Between the gov't and these companies, how is the average blue collar guy supposed to stay ahead? >:( It has gotten ridiculous over the past few months.
-
All these fees come directly from the government. You do realize that right? Think about it, the fees that private business were assessed for the debit card usage was 44 cents. The gov't decided that was to much for a business to pay. WTF?? the gov't should get their hands out of the private sector. Business have learned how to increase the cost of items to cover for that fee. So we are already paying for the 44 cents and didnt even realize it. So now the banks were used to that extra 23 cents and are going to have to make up for that money some how. They will find a way whether it be debit card fees or some other bullshiot fee. Watch by the middle of next year every bank will charge a monthly fee to use a debit card. It will just become the norm.
Mike,
Small town banks are the worse when it comes to fees. Do some research and you will see, That is unless you have lots of money tied up in there bank. Credit Unions ARE the way to go if you ask me. I just do not like that they are not very convenient to me most of the time. I mean my Publix credit union is in Norcross and that is the only one in the state of Georgia! So you just kind of have to decide which is more important. Gas or a little $5 a month fee that is hardly noticeable.

Ed Zachary.
Plus the gov. changing what the banks charge for overdrafts.
-
I just read that in the NY Times this morning. I will be moving everything over to my Delta community credit union soon.
-
All of my banking is done through the local credit union. I pay nothing for debit or checking and have decent rates on my loans with them.
-
Yeah, credit unions are far and few between compared to banks. I have one 2 miles from the house so it will be great for us. I hardly use my debit card as it is as I pay cash for about everything. Bad part is, I think alot of businesses are moving away from accepting cash. I had a place tell me they did not accept cash the other day while trying to pay a bill WTF. What has happened to this country is just sad. Went from simple ways, to ridiculous. I bet 80 percent or more of americans carry no cash and use the debit/ charge for everything now adays. My dad always told me, "If you don't have the cash to pay for it, you don't buy it" Save up and buy it. Man, if I would have taken that advice 20 years ago! ::)
-
Yeah you would be renting a house and driving a beater. Some things are meant to be financed.
-
Haha I agree with you Ben. If only I would have listened to the Old Man.
With that being said I do not carry cash. With the exception of an emergency $20.
I have 2 bank account set up. One gets the majority of my money and that goes to bills.
Then I have another account set up with a predetermined amount that is directly deposited into that account. Which I only use to pay for food gas and groceries. When it hits zero I guess its time for the Ramen Noodles. Kind of an easy electronic budget. At the end of the month whatever is not used goes to the savings account. Just and idea I use that I should share.
-
Richard, I honestly wish I was renting and not owning right now. I also have 3 paid for vehicles and will NEVER have another car payment. I recently found my contract for the Jeep while rummaging around in the shed. I ended up paying $35,000 for the damn thing! After the vehicle price, roll in amount and percentage rates. I almost shiat myself knowing I had paid that much for a jeep. I refuse to pay any additional payments for anything anymore. If I do not have the cash, I do not buy. May sound old fashioned but I am literally less than 2 months away from being debt free. Now that will be an awesome feeling. It is way too easy to get yourself into $ trouble today with all the sign up and get the card free deals etc. Banks and credit companies are praying on the young and stupid. I had to learn the hard way and am pulling myself out of an enormous hole that my wife and I dug for ourselves. Once out, that's it. I could give a shiat less about fica, credit and whatever scores. All a bunch of horsepoop anyway.
-
The only thing I got is since I was Wachovia before Wellsfargo we do not get charged the fee's. BUT if I want to open another account at Wellsfargo that account will be subject to all fees.
Ben, I agree. New cars suck. We were looking at GC's but megs liberty is so close to done it will get paid off, then double up on the LJ. I have already said if the LJ got totalled tomorrow I would buy craigslist. My brother bought a civic off craigslist for $3k, put about $1k of maintenance parts in it and has been driving it for 3 years or so now. Not saying I want a civic but you get the idea here.

I've always banked with small town banks ,except for once when I went to BB&T and realized real quick I needed to get away from them, and have never been charged any fees. May have to look into credit unions just in case cause if my small town banks ever try and charge me to use my money I will pull it from them.

Just another way to separate you from your money. They know that most employers pay their people thru direct deposit & have figured out a way to get more cash from you. Next it will be a service charge to access your account online.

I have been with Delta's Credit Union for nearly 25 years, used to be awesome, it's still better than most banks but they too saw the need to get into the public market and it's now "Delta Community Credit Union" and anyone can bank with them. It used to be only employees and immediate family. Seems rates were better and interest paid was better when we were private. Glad your plan is working Ben I know you and I discussed several years ago about the debt free thing, I still carry cash but only to use if a good deal pops up on something (AKA Mad Money) I pay for pretty much everything with debit (which is same as cash, comes straight out of my checking) or credit card which is paid off monthly by single transfer of funds, we use award points from both for gift cards that in turn is like "free money". No car notes, and we owe less for our little house than most folks do on their car. It's a good feeling and has been a lot of work that I must thank Donna for. When they start charging a debit fee I will re-evaluate our banking ways. All that being said look around Delta is opening up Branches all over Atlanta.

I work for an EMC and am able to use GEMC credit union as a local bank and Charles Schwab as my online bank. No fees for either and Schwab pays interest on my checking account. They also reimburse me all ATM fees at the end of each month...at least for now.
I wouldn't use Wachovia/Wells Fargo or Bank of America on a dare...total and complete rip off artists.
-
This BOA thing is BS. While I see most of you are saying you pay cash which is good.
IF - capital letters there - you can manage your credit card it wouldn't be such a bad idea to get a credit card like Discover that pays you cash back. I pay most all of my utility bills, all of our gas, groceries, etc with our Discover card and get at least 1% back and more when they have certain promotions.
Then once a week I make a payment to pay off what I have bought for the week. Thus earning the 1%+ and in essence paying cash.
Make your money work for you. It may be only 1% but you be surprised to find out how quickly it adds up. Justified a couple of Jeep parts with it.
I would not encourage everyone to do it because some just cannot handle credit cards and will have a tendency to buy more just because they are not having to physically pull the money out of their pocket. If, though, you are able to control it, it definitely helps. Both I and my husband lost our jobs within a few weeks of each other so I was grasping at anything I could to help with our income and started doing this. Losing that 6 figure income hurts but it's how you deal with the wound that counts.
I keep waiting for them to do away with this but as long as I can earn cash back I am there.

Countrywide sold my home mortgage to Bank of America, should I be worried? It is a fixed rate and supposed to not ever change or at least thats the way it was when Countrywide had it. One day out of the blue i got a letter from Bank of America saying that they had my home loan now, no warning and wasn't by choice.

you will be fine Andy. The loan is what it is no matter which institution owns/buys it. It maybe sold again in the future.

I get well over $3 back in rewards points from Wells Fargo every month, so it doesn't bother me really. The peace of mind is worth it. I rarely carry cash. If you lost your wallet with $300 cash in it, you are out $300. I pay for everything with my debit card (which is cash in my accounts, not financed). If I lose my wallet with both debit cards and both credit cards in it, I am out 20 minutes worth of phone calls. Last year when my debit card number was stolen, WF had all of my money back in my account in days, including all the international transaction charges. Excellent to deal with, very friendly and very smooth.
I also like the fact that WF doesn't like to sell mortgages, so all of my finances are all packaged neatly together.
-
If you have the discipline to pay off CC bills every month and just use the debit card at the ATM, there's no fee for the debit card.
Countrywide didn't see mortgages to BOA; BOA bought Countrywide ( much to their regret). Doesn't effect the loan terms.
Brokerage firms have banking services such as billpay and debit/credit cards, so if you have an account you can use them for banking. Most will rebate ATM fees for up to once per week.

Not like mortgages getting passed around like a blunt at a 311 concert had anything to do with out current economic situation. {popcorn}

I always thought it was illegal for a company in the US to refuse US minted money? Thats why some people pay fines with pennies becasue they can't refuse the payment.
-
Oh and my CBC bank charges for using my debit card as a debit card but nothing to use it as a credit card. I always use my card as credit.
-
Credit for me. Take all the protection and points. Pay off every month.

Marks right, you'll be fine and if you start bankin with them you may noy pay any fees, I have a credit accound, 2 checking accounts, a money market growth account, savings, and a mortgage all with BOA and I have no fees and even get free checks and wire tractions, I don't use checks but it still good to have when Tags are due,

I may be the exception, but I'm happy with WF (I was a Wachovia customer, and First Union before that). Its mostly likely because we had a special account at FU that got moved to Wachovia (friend used to be a loan mgr), and we keep a lot of money at WF so they treat us pretty well (no fees for pretty much anything).
That being said, at the first sign of them screwing with us, I'm going CU and we've got a ton of great choices: IBM SECU, Pentagon Federal, and Navy Federal.
