Title: Beasley Ride: December 1st
Post by: LR Max on November 08, 2012, 11:41:32 AM
Original post below.

Poll indicates a lot of people want to go on Dec 1st...which is fine.

Meet at the trailhead (see google map below) between 9 and 9:30am. Roll out at 9:30am. Look for the old tan Land Rover with the white roof. That is mine (pretty hard to miss).

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=34.88227,-83.924648&ll=34.883361,-83.927178&spn=0.021862,0.049653&num=1&t=m&z=15&lci=com.panoramio.all

Check back here often if you are going. I will cancel if there is any precipitation the day of or the previous days (all up for debate, BTW).

Afterwards if we all want to go to Bell mtn, we can.

Please post up if you are going. I'm pretty excited to actually be going since I've been threatening for a while now.

-Max

Good morning All,

Despite living within reasonable distance to Beasley, I've never been. I just heard rumors that there might be some changes in the future up there, so I figure that is a good enough excuse to go wheeling.

I wanted to see if there was any interest in going up there for the day. I live in ATL so I would just cruise up 400. I figure try to roll out from the pay station at 9:30-ish.

Any interest? Of course assuming it isn't too wet up there. I'm open to days but I'm feeling like Dec. 1st or the 8th would be best. Also open to riding on a Sunday and/or possibly camping nearby but I figure since it is close, a day trip sounds about right.

Thanks all.

BTW, need more wheeling-inducing rumors.

Beasley is not closing. Just re working some trails. They do close in Dec- Feb I think.

You probably saw my post over on Expo about it. Just the winter closure. Trick now is finding a week that stays dry all week for the FS will keep it open for the weekend.

Indeed. I guess I should've re-phrased it as the "seasonal closing". Same thing happened every year at Uwharrie. Also as mentioned earlier, excuses help get me off my duff.

@BigJerm, yeah I saw that post. Just got me thinking about going up there and thought this might be a better venue to find others interested. I like Expo but I doubt the majority there are interested in going to Beasley.

I am always game to go. It isnt hard trails by any means. I let me wife drive the LJ for the first time half the day we were there. But for $5 and a nice drive in the mountains to get there Ill go and maybe stop at Bell MTN before the day is over.

Now that would be a good trip. Never done Bell so I would be up for that. Broke right now... figuratively and monetarily.  ;D

Primarily Beasley with a possible side trip over to Bell mtn.

Will depend on how we feel, if womenfolk nagging is at a level 3 or higher, if the mechanic gods strikes someone, how much light is in the sky, possible dinner opportunities in the area, etc.

You know, play it by ear.

Careful with bell it's not a log trip and very limited in space at the top

Agreed there is little room on Bell.  Best for a group of 5 or 6.  Awesome on a clear day.

Primarily Beasley with a possible side trip over to Bell mtn.

We've got a CORE ride this weekend, and another set up for December 7-9.  When are you planning on going to Beasley?

Is Beasleys for the novice or do the trails vary?
Title: Re: Beasley Before It closes for Winter
Post by: DOUG on November 08, 2012, 08:40:08 PM
A novice can have a good feel for the lines, but nothing beats experience.

Beasley can be challenging.  It is rutted and/or steep in places and can put you in a flop if you're not careful.

I have seen stock jeeps go everywhere except 93B, and I've seen built rigs on their side by riding up on one side of the trail and not splitting the rut.

If you can go with someone who has experience, do so,and watch their lines and do a little follow the leader.

I was thinking either December 1st or the 8th. But sounds like the 8th is out due to the ride you are talking about.

As mentioned before, I'm open to other suggested dates...before they close for the season.

I semi-disagree with you. There is good space up there. Then again its been a while since I've ridden with more than 5 trucks. I think 5 trucks could be up there with no problem. However 20, yeah, I don't know about that...

I've been with almost 20 and it sucked. They didn't wanna break the group up and you could tell it was dragging on everyone.

I think they are talking about a crowd at Bell.

Yes at Beasley it sucked with that many! That day I broke off from the group and had a blast afterwards. The sitting and sitting for the worn out tires was a killer

I've changed the title post to reflect updated info. Basically, shoot me a PM and let me know you are coming. Then show up between 9 and 9:30 on Dec 1st. That is all there is to it.

Well I hate to do this, but despite organizing this, I'm out.

My rig blew its engine Saturday night, it doesn't move under its own power right now  :bs) . So no wheeling for me.

I'm sorry for this but it was definitely unforeseen. If anyone wants to take the torch and keep it going, feel free.

Experience is far more important than rig at Beasley on 90% of the trails, due to the steep grades and ruts..

I'm still hoping to go.  My shocks and springs arrived late yesterday, but still take adjustment and charging.  Also need new mounts fabbed for the front tops so that they won't hit the alternator like the old ones.  And hopefully no more rain the rest of the week.

I am still planning to go, going to check back here between now and Sat to make sure there is at least someone else still going. This will be my second trip out since a rebuild so I want to take it easy plus my first time to Beasley. I will be in a tan flatbed Toyota, just listen for a noisy power steering pump. There's two basic ways to get there - up 575/5, or 60 through Dahlonega. 60 is a scenic drive, but goes over Blood Mtn.  Anyone towing will have an easier job going the other way.

I'm out.

Due to a delay on my end, I have not yet got my shocks back from Rock Krawler. Oh yea, FYI... if you didn't already know, Rock Krawler ROCKS!!  </ROCKIN/>

Also, my rig is not GATR compliant as something snapped in my e-brake system and I have no e-brake at all.

Y'all have fun & be safe!

Depending on how small the Waffle House parking lot is I will probably just cruise on by and head to the windy hill road parking lot since I will be towing. That will give me time to unload anyway. I assume that is the trailhead that everyone will head to since its the closest to Waffle House right?

Just got home after a longish day.  4 rigs in attendance: besides myself, ScottF in a built Toyota truggy, Tex176 in a wrangler, and jkDave in a jk (duh).  No issues until late afternoon when we went to try 93B.  Dave elected to park his Jeep and ride with Tex.  The bad news was Tex breaking a rear driveshaft about a 3rd of the way up; the good news was that the break was right next to a bypass trail.  We were able to winch him onto the bypass so that he could head downhill in front wheel drive.

Scott and I proceeded to the top without further damage other than me snapping off my CB antenna somehow.  New coilovers worked well.

Had a good time out there yesterday, good meeting everyone. Didn't scare the wife too much not to go with me again so I guess that makes it a success.

Only downside of the day was Dallas breaking his rear driveshaft. No rock contact, the u-joint just let go.

I'm taking pictures of the driveshaft in a few ill post up. But it clearly gave out in the ujoints causing the damage to the driveshaft. It seemed the census was it was a defect in the ujoints. I'm going to reach out to teraflex on this one.

Here are a few pictures from today.  Up until the drive shaft break it was a great day.  Thanks to Tim for guiding me all around the trails!!
No problem on the guidance from the passenger side seat.  It was a pleasure meeting you guys so I decided to join up here.  Thanks to Kvom for the always fun trip, hope you like the new coilovers.
