So check this out. I have a set of 14 stupid bright lights each containing 34 military grade LEDs that have been sitting in my garage. They are designed for a Striker Armored Vehicle and are about 4"x 6" big. I have all the wiring and even its own switch box to controle individual "zones" of 2 lights each.
Here's the hang up, it's designed to run off of a 24 volt system. I attempted to get at least one zone of 2 working on my old rig, but could never get them to fire up. I admit, I am by NO means savey with electrical anything that I cant just plug into a wall, so I guess my question would be is there a way to get this to work on a 12 volt system? I'm sure it would work just fine and I just wired it stupid or something when I tried last time.
Suggestions?
On a side note, There is no way I am going to be able to mount all of these things onto my rig, so if I can get these to working I mite have some for sale or something. Like $20 or so for a set of 2 because at most I'll use 4 on mine. Anyone who can give me a way to get these running, I'll give you a set. Deal? {cheers2}
-
If you had 2 - 12 volt batteries, but I don't know anyway to make them work on a 12v system..
but they will look awesome on my golf cart! lol
-
They make DC to DC booster converters for 12 to 24 volt configurations with screw type terminals. They are going to be a little pricey and require a little bit of room. But if your set on running those lights that would probably be your best option. Hope this helped some

Who makes them? I bet it's cheaper than buying lights.

Quick search turned this up. Looks like boats use them for lighting.

If that works, i might grab the extras you have.

If it does, then definitely ;D

There is a couple of options (like these). Its like any other part, just have to do some research and decide what would be best for you.

Hah hah, make a great lead vehicle set up though. ;D

My plan is 2 on either side of the windshield, 2 on the bumper, and 2 underneath. IF I can get it to work of course.

Make sure you do some detailed research on the DC to DC booster (if you go that route). As i am not sure on how many lights a single unit could run. But obviously the leds would not draw to much power. Just my 2 cents

Well it'd only take 1 connection as they all connect to a main toggle switch box which then runs to the power source and ground. So I could easily run a max of 8 lights off of that one source.

Very close. Now I just need to find one that has a 30A instead of 10A output and I believe it'd work. </ROCKIN/>

Purely aesthetic right now. They're wired and mounted, just not powered.

Nice they look good save me a set I am in need of some lights
-
Will do. But the draw back is they only work on a 24v circuit so you'd also have to get a converter. 30A. That's y I'm selling the rest for so cheep. Otherwise dude, these would easily go for a few huno because these one wouldn't find on the open market.

-
Why do you think that the 10a won't work? Is there a heavy draw due to the uptick in voltage with regard to amps?
-
It's because on the power cable, there's a 30A fuse which goes directly to the switch box. So yeah, I'm concluding that there's a significant power draw here.

-
Yep, thats a good sign.
LED's don't normally draw high amps. You sure those aren't laser's? Lol

LOL! Mite as well be Doug. I have seen these in use before on Strikers while down range, and dude they could probably burn througha brick wall if left pointed at it long enough.. </LMAO/> </LMAO/>
-
I wouldnt mind a set either if you can find a cheap way to convert to 12v, these would be perfect for my trailer
-
Oh I have no doubt they would work awesome in that application.
-
I'm definitely interested in picking up a set from you. I'm sure I could get them running... (famous last words)
-
Also, according to the manufacturer, each lamp draws less than 3 amps @ 24 volts:

Yeah after some resurch of my own, a 10A converter should do the trick. I mite have a good line on one for around $60, so we'll see.

Do it

^^^double post owns you :)

Did a test yesterday, Definately can go with a 10A and run all 6 lights!! The guy who did the test for me is a dude who is introdusing a new type of power supply to the army that my platoon and I are going to be testing in Feb. Anyway, he says he can get me just the converter I need for around $50!!! And he's got some smaller 12V 6 LED lights which he's hooking me up w/ 2 to replace the little rock lights underneath!! </ROCKIN/> </ROCKIN/> </ROCKIN/> Pics coming once its all up and running

Got 4 of these bad boys from Ryan yesterday. These things are built like tanks! (Pun!)
As soon as I get them mounted and decide on my 24v wiring system, I'll post pictures and details.
-
Heh heh. Wasn't kidding was I. ;D They're friggn huge, and extremely durable. I have a set of 2 still if anyone else wants them. Also, once I get the low down on where my guy is getting the converter from, I'll be sure to post.

Are you ever around Marietta? I'll take a couple off your hands.

Great deal on pirate 4 led rock lights. Under $50 for 20 lights. http://www.pirate4x4.com/forum/miscellaneous/1058739-rock-lights-under-50-strand-20-lights.html
For his Thanksgiving sale he was giving away a bunch of free light when ordering. I ended up with 70 plus wiring for them. I have 2 jeeps to do but I'm sure I will have some left over.
-
I need some rock lights! Let me know
-
Here are the rock lights I just installed the other day. They are a smaller 12v version of the bigger 24v ones I've been talking about.

Not really up there much, but I can definately ship some to you. I only have a set of flood lights left. Still $20 plus shipping, which isnt too bad. I sent 4 lights to mzmtg and it only cost like $13 to send em.
-
If he doesn't want them I do for my trailer

Mounted, still not wired

I got two of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008HMETBE/ (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008HMETBE/) (LM2577 DC-DC Adjustable Step-up Power Converter Module)
Some of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A9Z8V2K (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A9Z8V2K) (Accel/DFI's Weatherproof Electrical 2 Pin Connector 74812)
One of these: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002ZPUCG (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002ZPUCG) (Project Box 5-1/4" x 3-1/4")
...and some relays and built my own converter. I don't know if it's really durable enough for long term under-hood survival, but it's working fine for now. Each of those DC-DC converters can push up to 2.5 amps, so it will only power one lamp. But, this way, if a converter (or my soldering job) fails, I only lose one light, not both.
And yeah, the lights are insanely bright </ROCKIN/>
-
Awesome!! I think I'm going to go the same route. Fortunately I wont have to get the relays or connectors, just the converters and box. I do like that each has its own power source, makes it easy to identify which one crapped out. Well done dude! {cheers2}
-

The converters are TINY. Each one is about the size of 2 postage stamps. They could go into a very small enclosure if you wanted them to.
-
Yeah I was noticing that there isnt much to em. As long as they work... lol
-
So, there ya have it. Almost couldn't take the picture.

Spots & floods?

Yeah. Spotters in front, and flood on the windshield frame. I have the floods toed out slightly as well. Gives me nearly a 180 degree field of light.
-
I'm not ridin in front of you on a night ride. Just keep in mind, our great lights do no good unless you are the lead dog. I hate when I am riding and the guy behind me has all his running. Looks great man! Get a shot at night and lets see the distance, beam patterns.
-
Yeah I feel ya there bud. Soonest I'll be able to would be thuersday for night pics.
