Garage Safety
« on: December 18, 2014, 07:22:33 AM »
Almost all of us work on our own rigs at home in some way or another.  This time of year, lots of new goodies coming to our doors for install...don't forget proper safe working habits.

My next door neighbor's brother passed away Sunday afternoon from an unsafe work condition.  He was 53 and had 6 kids.  He was working underneath his car, had a wheel off with only a jack to hold it up.  Either the jack mechanism failed or the vehicle slipped off the jack but ultimately he was crushed and passed away from the injuries.

A safe garage environment should go without saying but it is still worth repeating:

1.  ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS use properly rated jack and jack stands when you have your vehicle jacked up.  Do not side load the jack stands, the load should be directly above it.
2.  Work on a flat surface area and put your wheels/tires back up under the vehicle for added safety.
3.  Wear gloves whenever possible
4.  Wear safety glasses
5.  Block off your wheels so the vehicle won't move from it's jacked position
6.  Disconnect the battery if you are doing anything under the hood

Working on your own vehicle is satisfying and fun but don't take shortcuts on safety!

Thanks for sharing this Tony.  We lost a family friend awhile back this way, and another escaped serious injury because he had the wheel in the right place but he was trapped.

Prayers for the family.  An awful tragedy.

Always grab those jack stands.

Disconnecting the batter while welding will help from frying the pcm as well. Not a health safety tip for a wallet safety tip.

It's easy to get in a hurry and do something stupid that you're comfortable with. Always take a few extra minutes and be safe!

Good practice but not always true. My dad did some welding on my old TJ and it was not until after the fact did both of us realize we forgot to disconnect the battery.

I've done it several times. Better safe than sorry and it only takes me about 1 minute to set the radio up again. Lol

Just don't disconnect the battery right before an emissions test.  You have to drive about 100 miles or so to reset the ECM before it will pass.

That's a very sad story Tony. I would bet we are all guilty of doing work, like a rotate, without jack stands. I don't think I could actually slide under a car without them, I watched a car fall on someone. Fortunately, he was lucky.
