Tube instead of spare for Moab
« on: January 21, 2016, 06:04:03 AM »
Instead of lugging around a spare tire in Moab, where we do day trips, what are your thoughts about carrying an inner tube?  I ran all of Moab last year with that spare tire on the back; Of course, I did not have any tire issues out there.  I don't believe anyone needed a spare tire on that trip.

I have beadlocks, so disassembly/reassembly would be required, plus having to deal with the valve stem on the inner tube.  Assume I'm not lazy, despite recent comments in another thread :)

With  cuts/gashes a tube would work  with one of or the combination of these items:

-The cut can be filled with plugs--the long spaghetti looking type.
-Or a thin mechanics or piano wire could be used to stitch the cut.  An awl would be needed to make the holes to thread the wire through.
-A large patch or boot could be applied to the inside of the tire over the cut.  A pre-patch  cleaner and glue would be needed for this procedure.

Seems like those choices all would take a lot of time, as would installing the tube and torquing all the bolts.  Better for you and the group to carry a spare except maybe at hells and bfe.

If there are enough of each size, we could designate a few people to carry spares, then alternate

yeah, that didn't work last time, but maybe you JK guys can work something out.

My current bolt pattern is 5 x 4.5, but I think my rear axles can do two patterns, so pressing out 5 studs, pressing in 5...never mind, I'll carry a damn spare!

True...my current spare is just to get me off the trail, since it is significantly smaller than my regular tires...so that will take time, too.  Maybe I will invest in a real spare.

Tire balls. Kinda like a tube deal and could run with wholes or cuts.
