Locked Steering Dana 30???
« on: April 05, 2009, 11:04:24 PM »
Any one have any in site on locking a steering dana 30.  I want to lock the front of my XJ with a loc-rite or Aussie. A shop told me it would be fine if I didn't mind the noise. It's not a daily driver, but I don't trailer either. I'm not sure if my axles are stock or upgraded. I haven't pulled them apart yet. If stock I know I will probable have to upgrade to chrome alloy or similar axles.  Any help would be appreciated.

A lot of people on here, including myself on my old 30, run Aussies or Lock-rites in the front. They are invisible on the street and work like a champ on the trails.

The description "Locked Steering" threw me off for a second!

I also run a lock right in my stock D30 with 33" tires and it's held up so far. It's been on rocks, mud and is my DD. The only time I get noise out of it is in tight turns.

I run a detroit locker on my dana 30 front . it runs fine , no noise . but it does pull right when you hit the gas and pulls back left when you let off . other than that it works great!!!  note it didn't do it before the locker addition ! ;D

I have been told by a couple of friends of mine wich are pretty good gear heads that you should put your money in the front . I gues the logic being that you dont run your front as much only when you are in 4wd.

That and your front helps pull you over an obstacle versus being pushed. Takes a little strain off of the rear!

just to add, i also run a Aussie in my D30. completely transparent in 2wd.... audible, yet faint clicking as it ratchets while turning. in 4wd, it widens out the turning radius a bit and also contributes to a little more bucking when turning. particularly on hardpack surfaces. it ate a u-joint in Moab back in '06.... but it was gonna happen anyway. carry spares. once you change one or two, its second nature.  ;)

tell ya what. i'll sell you my Aussie....  $5,000 .... comes attached to a ZJ

btw. performance shot not otherwise possible without the locker:
'07 Unlimited Rubicon.. aaaalllll black, baby!
