Dodge Intrepid with Death Wobble

Yes, it is possible to have a wobble on a street car. I found out. Kathleen has been complaining that here car is all over the road and has a bad wobble when braking. I thought it was just warped rotors, so I've kind of been blowing it off for later. When she said it wobbles sometimes when she accelerates, I got a little more concerned.

Well today I took it for a drive and was finally able to reproduce the problem. It felt just like a baby death wobble, kind of like the wheel was gonna exit the vehicle.  I tore into and found that the tie rod bushings were shot at the steering rack. In fact the passenger side was completely gone.

Funny thing is that about 2 years ago, she went to pull away from a stop sign and both tie rod bolts at the steering rack sheared and she had no steering. We had the Stone Mountain Chrysler fix it because I didn't want to mess with it. Well, $900 later it was good, at least that's what I thought.

The dealer has a steering gear repair kit that only costs $25 and comes with new bolts and new bushings. That's $25 at my cost. I find it hard to believe that the bushings would go bad after only two years. I suspect that they didn't even replace them and just put new bolts in.

Anyway, just another reason to do it yourself. That's how I spent my day today and still get to put it back together tomorrow.   {boohoo}

Mike!   jeeeez.  Glad you took a look before serious problems arose again.  I would have thought rotors as well.  Sounds like a common/repeatative problem with the vehicle.  Have there been any serious injuries/class action suits from this?  Seems like there could have been some loss of steering/ tragic results.  Glad you found it and got it fixed.

Can't wait til the new garage is open at the new crib.   {letseat}

Yeah, that car is just a shat bucket. Very poorly designed in my opinion. It's no wonder they are filing bankruptcy. They deserve it for putting crap like that on the road.

I'm not sure about class action suits or not, but I think it is pretty common with these cars. At least the bushings wearing out. I'm not sure about how many have lost steering completely.

I just can't convince her to trade it since it's paid for.
