tow dolly towing
« on: October 19, 2009, 09:34:59 PM »
I know you guys are mostly against the tow dolly method of towing but I have a question on them. I have access to one and need to know about the weight limit warnings. The one I can use says do not exceed 2950#. Is this for front axle of the vehicle? I assume so as most cars are over that limit anyway. My front is like 2200# or so, if I remember right. So anyway, I think I am right but need to know since I will be using a dolly for a few runs coming up. ;) I can't afford a fancy trailer yet! :P

I think that's the weight on the dolly like you are saying. To be safe, you might want to unbolt the rear DS from the axle. It talks about flat towing and dolly towing in your Jeep's manual I think, might be worth it to check it out just to save from grenading the t-case or trans.

If the tow dolly does not have brakes you will need to invest in tow buddy! In Georgia if you tow anything over 3000# you need an auxiliary braking system.

Jimmy, thanks. I am planning on disconnecting the rear shaft from the axle and should be fine with that. Chuck, that is crazy $ for that thing. I could buy a trailer for that price!!! But for now, I will take my chances with jonny law man. ;D

I don't think they enforce it at all! If they did U-haul would never be able to rent them out. Now, if your in an accident it's probably a different story.
