Crooked rear axle.
« on: January 08, 2017, 08:47:52 PM »
I noticed today that my rear axle is angled in, front of tire is even with wheel well, back of tire sticks out a little. How does that happen, and how do I fix it?  Chevy 10 bolt .  It does have 2 inch blocks on it ( that way when I got it). I don't think it's been that way long, tires are wearing even

You may have broken a U bolt or cracked the block.

I suspect you just need to center the axle, and tighten down the u straps/ bolts...or whatever those things that hold the axle to the leaf springs are called.

Of course, loosen them if they're not loose already.  You may want to note the pinion angle before you touch anything so you can get it back to the correct setting.  I'd take a ton of pictures before I messed with any of it...all possible angles, just in case you need a reference when you go to tighten everything back up.

Probably got that way from some ass kicking you did on a trail...maybe even while going out to get milf & bread.

No need in pinion angle stuff. It only fits one way. Center pin of leaf spring into block & nub on the block goes in the leaf spring. Tighten the u bolts to spec & carry on.

Check for a bent or broken center pin in one of the leafs as well. If the u bolts loosen it removes the clamping force between the axle and leaf (and in your case lift blocks as well), which will usually result in bending the end of the center pin or worse it shearing off because it is not designed to see that kind of load. It's just for initial alignment of the axle prior to u bolt torque.

When you put in new u bolts (like when adding lift blocks) I have noticed the bolts have a tendency to have a little plastic deformation (permanent elongation) after initial torque or often in ones I put on, over-torque. So going back to recheck torque on them awhile after installation is a good idea.

Either way, don't stress. Fixes on leaf spring setups are easy and usually cheap.

Sheared pin in drivers side. You can see in the picture that it is about an 1" off center, also there is a plate at the top that is missing .pics show both sides for comparison

The pin is fine. All you need to do is find a replacement part thats missing, remove the U bolts, SLIDE THE AXLE BACK IN PLACE, & bolt it back together. I suggest getting new u bolts. Those look crusty.
