Rebuilt Title
« on: January 29, 2009, 09:03:38 PM »
I am have been looking at a truck online that has a rebuilt title.  The guy says the damage was mainly to the front and some to the side and he has pictures of the truck when it was damaged.. It is about $2,000 under KBB value...do you guys think its a bad idea with the rebuilt title and all?

If you're going to cut it up for wheeling, go for it, but if you're going to try and resell it, it's kills the number of folks who will, and the price.  I stay clear of rebuilt's.  I have friends that drive them, but they buy them about 20-30% below wholesale.

It depends too on the quality of the repairs. I've seen "clipped" cars...where they cut cars in half or quarters...that were put together with sheetrock screws, metal tape, and bondo...and others that were put together so that they were stronger than stock...if you've been able to see what was broken before and see what was repaired...
I hope I get to trail ride this year.

I've seen rebuilt cars that drive down the road crooked and I've seen rebuilt cars that look brand spankin' new. The inspection process (to get the title changed from salvage to repaired) has gotten a lot stricter in the past few years. If the guy is up front about the damage and documented the damage and the work, thats typically a good sign. I put 20k miles on the Ranger I rebuilt in a year and had 0 problems. I have buddies that have driven rebuilt cars for years and years. I agree that 2k below KBB is a little high for a rebuilt truck. Especially right now and for a fullsize truck. I just bought my truck for almost 10k below KBB.

Where is the truck coming from? Do you know the guys name by chance?

BTW this is the Ranger I built. Bought it like this:

Ended up like this (with my rebuilt bike, lol):

Some Banks, espicially now will not loan on a salvage title. Just another thing to think about.

sorry about the late reply guys, I'm not sure what the guy's name is Richard but he is near Chattanooga...I forgot to mention that I would be able to keep the jeep and basically park it except for joy rides in the summer and wheeling, so I think this would be a plus if we did buy it, I would have a safety valve should anything go wrong with the truck...we have gotten to know an owner of a collision center pretty well here in town due to my sister's wonderful driving ability  :bs) and we would probably take it by him to look over the rebuild materials and work done before any deal is made
