The new Apple TV is now app based, like your phone or iPad. You download from the App Store.  This way you just put on the apps you want.  Get "Bill's" Comcast X1 info put it in your iPad pick a channel, or game, and airplay it to your Apple TV which is connected to your 110" screen and projector.  Not saying I do that, because I don't know "Bill"

That connects a lot of dots

As cannon... said, Apple has this same model. So does Android, but Android is even more open than most and allow other manufacturers to make the equipment that runs the Android operating system and uses its play store.  My Sony platform is this way, but its specific implementation is not great;  My Sony actually has additional functionality, so when done well you can have a great device that does more than allow you to pay content via an app (for example, it could have an overlay search app that finds content on your device apps, your traditional content service provider, YouTube, etc and let you choose what to watch).
