how to clean up uneven flares after trimming?
« on: February 09, 2013, 04:17:57 PM »
Hey guys, I trimmed my flares today for the new tires. Well it turned out pretty crappy looking. The trim is real uneven(wavy). What's the best way to go about smoothing me out? I tried 250 grit by hand but it would take forever

Any ideas?

Adhesive door trim, I used a roll and a half on mine, gives it a clean look

Its too far uneven to use it. I'm thinking of a da sander or something.

Sander would work, just be careful not to follow the existing contour. Afer,  get ya some adhesive door trim. I did the same with mine and it made a huge difference.

A belt sand would work good to make a longer flat.Or a file.

I'll try that. The corners look good, its the flat parts that are uneven

The door trim will even out the look. When you put it on just don't push it down on all the low spots. It will dry straight and clean.

10'' bastard file using angled swipe across will do a pretty good job.

^^^this will probably do the best at evening out the waves.  You can hit the smaller stuff with one of the round sanding bits and a dremel.  It will slightly melt the plastic but you can pull off the melted stuff from the bottom.

Also, a very sharp razor blade in a full size handle works well.

I used a razor knife to begin with. Here's what it looks like

I haven't gotten a chance to try to even it up yet because of the rain

Sounds like a job for one of my favorite tools in the garage.

I'm gonna have to go pick one of those up from hf. Looks like that would work perfect
