High End Coolers

Always a topic of discussion, especially during camping and wheeling season...which is the best cooler.  Here is an interesting video on some of the high end coolers:

After using several brands of coolers I have found that what you put in it goes a long way. If your food and drinks are already cold going in then the ice will keep longer. Also freezing bottles or milk jugs and putting them in a cooler will stay frozen for hours and act as an ice pack. Recently at the beach I froze water bottles in the freezer and then tossed them in a cheap styrofoam cooler and they stayed mostly frozen all day!

Yeti's overly priced cooler I hunt and fish and believe I use the heck out of the products I buy. On that not I do own a yeti and its good as along as u leave it closed they are not made for opening and closing. Like a normal cooler. Orca makes a decent cooler. But it's all about what ur wanna spend ur money on. I own a yeti and other brands as well.

Key to the Yeti is cooling down the cooler first... then it will keep items cold and ice for 7-8 days.

Guys that use them every week say they pay for themselves in gas and ice

but recreational use a few times a year is not worth the cost.

I have a cleman 5 day cooler, junk. I have an igloo cheapo, better. I just freeze my water bottles and some gallon jugs of water and it stays frozen with no issues. Just as Jerm stated.
I've grown tired of this.

Unfortunately they aren't close in performance.  2 days vs 7 or 8.

Full review of all the coolers listed above plus more was done by JP Mag in the September 2012 issue.

I like the Yeti and no doubt it does its job well but damn I can afford a lot of ice and frozen water bottles for that price! The cheapest I see is their little travel cooler, the Roadie, at $229... ouch. I bought this Igloo cooler for $60 at Costco and it came with an Igloo travel cooler as well http://www.igloocoolers.com/Coolers/All-Coolers/Super-Tough-72

Just last week I took it to work where it sat in the truck warm till lunch time. Bought 2 bags of ice and went home. Loaded it up with room temp beer/water and drove 2 hours to Milledgeville. It sat on the tailgate all afternoon/night while I kept opening for beer. The next day it still had a decent amount of ice in it but I made a quick Ice run for me and a few others. I can only imagine there would have been no need for additional ice if the cooler was not hot from sitting in the truck and if the contents would have already been cold before going in.

way back when I spent the coin for the Coleman "Extreme" cooler that is suppose to hold ice for 7 days. That didn't last long, after the cooler started to come apart. My dad gave me his old Coleman regular cooler and that will keep stuff cold for 2-3 days before I need to add additional ice.  When I head out, I always ice up at one of the Twice The Ice machines and look for them when I get to wherever it is I'm going for refills. I figure it would take me more than my life time to pay for a Yeti. Now if I was younger, like 2, then maybe I would realize some savings.
