3 season tent in cool weather
« on: February 24, 2014, 06:03:50 PM »
I'm planning on using a 9'x10' 3 season tent at the March trip location.  It has open mesh on two out of four panels at the top, about 1/4 of the way down the side (each triangle is about 3'x4'x3').

I have a 0 degree sleeping bag and I'll be on a cot.

Will I be very uncomfortable?

Is there a good way to temporarily cover the mesh openings?

Does it not have the little cover to go over the top
also you could use a canopy to go over the top

If it has a rain fly you will be fine. My winter tent is totally mesh and then rain fly. It is warm

Ok, thanks for the feedback.  No new tent is needed!

I may, or may not, have an instant canopy over my setup...money, money, money.   Creating a dry space is awesome, so I would bet I have one.

the only reason you might get cold is due to sleeping on a cot. It will allow air to get under you. I would get a good wool blanket or something to insulate you and your sleeping bag from the cot. Best thing for tent camping is an insulated sleeping pad on the ground

What I do, even on an air mattress  is sleep on top of an emergency blanket to radiate the heat back

In my experience, a true zero degree bag in conjunction with a ground cover (thermarest pad or similar) will keep you warm with or without a tent. I own a couple of nice bags and my cold weather bag is like an oven. Even in sub-freezing temps I usually wind up unzipping it sometime during the night because I'm too hot.
