All purpose 4x4
« on: March 28, 2014, 11:23:02 AM »
Hey guys, i have always loved the idea of building an all purpose, cross country, expedition type vehicle. Something that you could get in and drive across the US out west or up to Alaska and be confident in your vehicle. Something like this would need to be able to get you through mountain ranges, ride smoothly down the interstates, and haul all necessary camping and driving essentials while maintaining decent fuel mileage. I was just curious as to what opinions you guys had on what makes a good all purpose vehicle including camping/living modifications, tools/parts, gear, and whatever else you can imagine.

My truck is a stock Chevrolet Silverado Z-71 4x4 with a 5.7L 350 V8 EFI and 4 spd. Automatic Transmission.  I Have 27" Kumho Road Warrior A/T on 16" alloy Tahoe wheels. I have installed a  Leer camper shell on the bed  which gives me pretty ample amounts of storage and a place to sleep at night. As fas as sleeping goes, i have a foldup cot that fits the bed quite nicely as well as a wool blanket that stays behind the seat.

What ideas do you guys have?

Are you carrying only yourself, or do you have a family to bring along?  Traveling in a caravan, or going solo?  Is money a concern?

Maintaining decent fuel mileage in a heavy vehicle is the hard part.

Cummins is releasing their 5.0 diesel late this year, that'd be real nice in there.

I'm just curious as to any ideas that would make life comfortable for a group of buddies and 3 or 4 rigs driving across country. No specific number of people

I have seen the jeep trailshade and i like that idea especially because of the camper shell on my truck. My dad actually had the idea to use a 10x10 canopy tent (like used for tailgating etc...) and back the rear of the truck under the canopy so that you can open the door and tailgate and be completely in the dry. I raised the tent up all the way and it worked quite beautifully.
