Yeah, I really surprised (*rolling eyes*)  http://www.mystatesman.com/news/business/austin-based-yeti-sues-competitor-over-confusingly/nphYg/

Yeti has been suing for awhile. Sued RTIC as well. Don't know that exact outcome but RTIC held off in shipping for quite awhile but they are shipping now so I assume they won.

My educated guess is legal strategy.  Win the first one and then it makes your case stronger and easier to win against the rest. They have to defend their patents or they lose them.
I agree.  I know for sure it doesn't always work based on events in my industry, but it makes sense to establish precedence and then maximize it against others who will just pay a license fee, or shut down, instead of pay legal bills.  Usually the lawyers are the ones who win in these types of situations,  especially when they stretch out for years.

Didn't sound to me like they were suing for patent infringement... rather for infringing on their "trade dress" which was something I hadn't heard of before:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trade_dress

Yeti lost to RTIC so I don't see them winning against anyone else. Of all the roto molded coolers the rtic was the most similar to the yeti. Almost undetectable without the logos

This topic came up today because a guy I work with observed that I have a Yeti and RTIC 30 oz cup that look identical.  I pointed out that my RTIC lid has a round opening to support a straw, but my Yeti doesn't...completely different products.  Lol

I think RTIC is a bad company, but my products from them are awesome.

Shame shame

You are correct.  I used the wrong term.  Same principals though,  suing for protection of IP.

Wasn't trying to split hairs. Just was gonna be surprised if Yeti had actual patents.

I've got one of each brands 30oz tumblers sitting on my desk right now that I'm about to powder coat. You can see the resemblance in the rtic and yeti but the ozark is 100% identical other than the embossed logo.

I keep asking for a yeti (399) one.  my wife came home one day and told me my yeti was in the car, i ran out like a kid on xmas, and i got one of those beer / can cozy yeti's.   it does keep the can cold.   she had a good laugh.
