What whould yall do.
« on: April 22, 2008, 05:24:22 PM »
I cannt decide what to do.

Buy a 8.8 with 4.10's and locker
Buy dana 30 with locker

Buy 8.8 and have 4.88's installed
get the 4.88's installed in my dana 30 already locked

I will have to wait until summer for a locker because of money.

I just dont know if 4.88's si going to be low enough for my needs.

But 8.8 with 4.10s and locker and then buy a HP30 with 4.10s.

Transfer locker from you current D30 to HP30.

Wait to regear until you can.

That is what I would do.

I can only comment for the TJ I bought from Chris, and the few mods I'm making.

Great choices, and budget constraints make a lot of decisions for us all.  I've got the 4:88's and auto without overdrive and 35's, and can't keep up on the highway, so I have a trailer now.  If it's a driver, I'd stick to the 4:10's.  Auto w/ OD?  Maybe if you have OD.  The other way to get low on the trail is the Teralow 4:1 kit for the 231, and keeps the driving ability high.  Sometimes what comes available at a certain time for a great price can change all your plans.

i have a 5 speed and would really like to have 5th back.  The main reason i hate the 3.73's is because i hear my clutch burning everytime i am on the trail.  I have to be in 4low and 1st gear for everything.  I think i can swing the locker with the 4.88s now that i have looked at all it is going to cost.  I will just have to wit for the SYE ::)  I can do that at any time.  I just want the mileage to go backup to 15 or so

What year is your TJ?  I'd take a look at TJ specs on jeep forum and look at the ratio of 5th in  your tranny.  Sounds like the low231 kit 4:1 would be groat for you.  Ever figure your crawl ratio?
1st gear x transfer case x axle ratio =?
I'll go from a 36.36 to a 53.48 by changing to a 4;1, and the street gears stay the same.

I would for sure put a centerforce clutch in when you can. Your stock clutch can only take so much. As for the axles, I would get them and have the gears installed. That way you know it was right when you put it in. One less thing to worry about.
I've grown tired of this.

I vote 8.8, 4.10s and locker
Keep the D30 which i'm assuming has 4.10s already?

And to take care of your wheeling a tera-low kit for the 231 as Slippery previously said
Go dawgs!
