Carry on luggage
« on: February 16, 2016, 07:26:20 PM »
I'm looking for a new carry on luggage bag.  My faithful Samsonite has bitten the dust.

Cost isn't a concern.

Any recommendations.

Briggs and Riley... or Eagle Creek at a slightly lower price point.

Ok, thanks guys.  I knew you had stated the Eagle one, but I couldn't find the thread.

If you don't travel much and carry on, I would buy low cost luggage that is

MAX SIZE CARRY ON

expandable with good zippers and a warranty and any other features you want.  I like a fold out for my shirts to keep the wrinkles to a min.  I don't like folded shirts since mine are so big lol.

I have about a dozen pieces of Tumi and Hartman small medium large and huge, folding garment, duffel, wheels, you name it and can't imagine I'll ever by another piece.

So buy good stuff that lasts and build on it

Tumi and Victorinox have always treated me right in terms of longevity.

The reviews on amazon for B&R crack me up, considering this bag is >$500:
 - great bag, after 8 trips, still works great.
---- TORG:  WTF, every bag should work great after just 8 trips!

 - This luggage holds up VERY well! After three uses it still looks like new. Only one problem: The zipper pull broke on the second use. I have temporarily repaired it myself because I did not want to be with out my luggage for any length of time. Zipper itself is the best I've ever had on luggage.
---- TORG:  WTH, 3 trips and the zipper broke on the second trip.

Yep, when I stated cost isn't a concern...I may have lied...I got nearly 15 years and probably 30 trips out of that Samsonite which was in a set of luggage that cost ~$150 from Sams Club.  The B&R stuff is at least $400 and I just can't see justifying that against a hundred dollar bag I could replace every 5 to 10 years.  I'll continue to look at the high end stuff since they may have features that justify extra bucks.

I picked up a cheapo at TJ Maxx tonight just so I have something while I continue the hunt for the right bag.  The one I got is a Delsey spinner with a super tall handle for $60.  I have 30 days to return it.

I looked at Tumi ultra light, but I'm willing to have it weigh something so it will maintain some structure, but great bag if weight is a top concern.

My current requirements list (MUSTs):
- carry-on sized
- outside pockets (at least 2)
- quality wheels (this is hard to judge)
- tall handle
- grab handle on the bottom (by the wheels)
- grab handle on top
- grab handle on one of the sides
- masculine exterior color
- if a spinner, must be able to be pulled on two wheels, too

Highly desired feature list (in addition to the MUSTs):
- expandable
- zipper lock with TSA key
- grab handle on both sides

Remind me to tell you a story about Samsonite, Felonius, Latrine, Velveeta, Mylanta, and Secretia.

Been rocking this guy for ~3yrs with only one spot of damage on it:
http://shop.eaglecreek.com/tarmac-carryon/d/1285_cl_2247

Think it's got all that.  It's a great bag.

OOH...that's nice!  I like the AWD version.

One question on the spinners, for those with them...do you have a problem with it drifting away from you while you're waiting to board, at ticketing, etc?  I saw someone post a review about a spinner that stated between it falling over and wondering away, it was a PITA to babysit.  I am wondering if that is really happening.

I may travel a bit more than the average bear, but I went pelican.

Multiple reasons, possible multiple use (ha), but mostly because I got tired of carrying my laptop on my shoulder or back.  I also don't need to worry about a last minute check of the carryon.  Multiple "valid" reasons...

I think I paid less than they have here, but its been a great bag for almost 5 years with only a few bumps and scars....

Hate spinners, wheels take up to much of my room.. Somebody needs to design one that doesn't
