You should be able to find a pretty decent XJ for $2300.
I bought one for  $150, put brakes all around- along with a fender & grill. I drove it for 2 years. The white one in my avitar wax $1500. It needed a battery. My red one was $1300 some blood, sweat, tears & almost $4k.
Don't be afraid to stop & ask if it's for sale. That's how I got 2 of the 3.

Good luck.

If you want it to tool around town. Yep

To wheel, probably not...but to each their own.

Thanks, I'm still undecided on exactly what I want.  Something partially bulit, or start from stock, that way I know exactly what's in it.  Cherokee, or TJ, LJ?  Wranglers are expensive compared to Cherokees.  I'll find something sooner or later.

$2300 is my kinda price range. Says body has rust...wonder how much that actually has.

Definetly not something for a hard core trail rig but old CJ 5s are cool to cruise around in.

I'm sure 9 speed was a typo or 3 speed x 3 speed case =9 speed.
Be patient. Something will turn up.
My vote is XJ.  They are cheap, parts are cheap in the junk yard & they have a longer wheel base than a CJ, YJ, or TJ.

I hate the 5s. There is zero room in them.  Hell,  there is no room in any of them. The only exception is the XJ, LJ & JKU.
I can afford a XJ.

Based on the age it's most likely a 3 speed. Non syncro'd first if so and wide gear spacing.

Would be nice if someone swapped in a later 4 speed though.
