Yes, it does seem that way, but statistically we live longer than ever before (excusing biblical accounts of ages). A lot of infant mortality has reduced, so the averages are greater. Reduction in hand to hand and close quarters combat has increased expectancy a good bit, too.
Dad died at 59 (diabetes, and I'm sure alcohol contributed)
Mom is still "living" at 78 (I think I'd rather be dead than visit a doctor every few weeks)
Half brother died at 48 (a hard life of drugs, alcohol, and diabetes...and being an asshole...no love lost there)
Half sister still alive at 50ish
