Baja 500
« on: June 06, 2019, 09:13:34 PM »
I went to Ensenada, Baja CA last weekend for the Baja 500. A race team that I sold tires to, I helped chase for them. This was my first time to Mexico  and BC. Got there late Thurseday night and Friday we took the truck to contingency and did some final prep. Had to change out a steering pump that was leaking.

Saturday was the day of the race. I was in one of the chase rigs. 40 or so miles in, the driver rear side sheared the lug nuts off the hub. It appears the lug nuts were not fully tighten. Took a while to get to them once we found a route. Broke it all down and got the truck back going but a mear 300 yards down the road, they rolled the freaking truck. It was a right hand turn with a deep rut on the left side. Not sure how they did but after that we called. Got to ride in the truck after we up righted it. Only 40 mph on course but I could only imagine letting it eat.

Truck races in the spec trophy truck class. Pretty much the difference between the spec class and full trophy truck would be the engine and trans. Engine is a sealed 525hp ls3 for SCORE with a th400 trans. They are running 40kr3's with the same travel and shock size as a tt.

BC has great food and drinks. Fun time down there. Encourage anyone to go watch a race down in BC. The course can get beat up and shocks get used on those rigs. My goal is get into a truck for part of a race.

That's really cool Tripp. I'd love to see a race like that in person one day

I'm in Destin, FL now, but one race team came by the guys with a blown tire on course before we made it to them to fix the hub. For whatever reason the TT team didn't didn't have a spare. They gave them their damaged wheel. The other tt team, left their busted tire and wheel on the ground. Wheel wss in great shape. Sure that happens all over the place. It was a toyo tire that they destroyed.

Check race dezert forum. Keep an eye over there.

Tt wheels all run 6 lug. Some think nothing less than 8 matter but those guys beat on a rig harder than most anyone and live on 6 lugs.

Zero are in operational condition right now.

SxS - did a fund raiser on Memorial weekend. Did a fun race and bent the lower A arm on the drive side. All kinds of special so I probably replace them with HCR arms.

TJ Jeep - Need to get suspension set up, coilovers, and bunpstops. Need that before I remove the drivetrain for prep. I can move it around the house now so I haven't really started in it until I get a few more parts.

Chassis - I have found headers, so gonna bolt them on and start routing things around. Everything major is pretty much at the house and will need help on a few things, but now that I'm done traveling North America at the end of the week I'll get back to it. Gonna make a list and go from there.
