Open Ride: Horseshoe Ridge Road on 1/26
« on: January 20, 2020, 07:57:09 PM »
First off, here's a link to the trail:  https://www.alltrails.com/explore/trail/us/georgia/horseshoe-ridge-road

It's an easy trail ride.

But, towards the top of that forest service road, there's another trail.  I went down it about a quarter mile and it was really cool.  I did a 13 point turn and backed out this weekend because I didn't know what I was about to get into.

I'm looking for a few folks that might enjoy getting into an unknown trail (at least to me) and seeing where it leads.

If you're interested in trying this out on 1/26, PM me.  I'd like to meet up at 10:00 a.m. at the trail head to Horseshoe Ridge and go from there.  Let me know if you're interested.

Was actually planning on an easy ride with two of my buddies that I’m trying to get more involved with the club this Sunday (one did our forest service road ride last month). One has an LJ on 33s and the other a Tacoma on 33s, neither wants anything extreme. So we should be in. My son has a basketball game in Marietta at 3:45 that day but I assume we could get the trail in with time to get back.

Where is this?
Get dirty, or get off the trail!

Sounds like fun.  Is this "other trail" on the map?  Just make sure it's open to the public and not private property.

Yes one of main rules is legal wheeling.
If there is any question then don't go
on a trail and never make your own.

I did some searching and it appears that the trail you're talking about is FS 247 which is closed. I like the interactive visitor map by the USFS, but then I'll reference the google maps overlay put together for the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests.

And if in doubt, call the local ranger station and they'll tell you if it's open or closed.

Check them out at the links below.

FS55 is Horseshoe Ridge,Which shares most of its traverse with Grassy Gap Road.  https://www.fs.fed.us/ivm/index.html?minx=-9356285&miny=4110689&maxx=-9348684&maxy=4115214&exploremenu=no

FS 247 is off of Horseshoe/Grassy gap and is indeed closed.

I have ventured up 58E Alec Mtn and 58B Lower Noontootla, both are spurs off of FS 58 Noontootla which is accessed via Doublehead Gap Road. These are unmaintained roads and it is not easy to turn around. I was told by a Ranger that as long as the gate is open that it was good to go. They occasionally close these roads with tree falls and inclement weather. I don't remember which trail but one of them has a church and a cemetery. I would like to go back sometime in the Spring or Summer.

Maps show those two (58E and B) as open 3/16 to 12/31 each year.  But if the ranger said if the gate is open they're good we could check those out, might get lucky.

We're on for tomorrow.  Meeting here at 10.  https://goo.gl/maps/vRY7T5K5oaQoXxhF9

No plans to get stuck, but it should be a fun ride through the woods.

And last time I went, I didn't get on FS247.  The area I went to that looked sketchy didn't have any signs to indicate it was closed; and it was a several miles away from FS247.  I'll take better notes this time and get a lat/long.  This is a cool road for a nice Sunday drive.  There was 1 waterfall that was significant (i.e. more than trickle falling down a rock).  I may take my wife along if she's up for it.
