When to rub your Meat?

How long before smoking should you apply the rub to a Boston Butt?

I always try to do the night before but have done it on short notice and didn’t notice a difference really.

I usually add it just before. Use mustard to bind it to the meat.

Same here. 
The night before when I have time.
Same here as well on pork, but makes  a big difference on other meats.
