Anyone need a 14bolt FF?
« on: August 26, 2021, 02:19:58 PM »
I am headed over to pick up a 10.5 full float van 14 bolt this afternoon. There is a second one available, truck model.

Anyone need one?

@bjeep

Thanks for the tag Patrick. But I am all set on 14 bolts for now.

I don’t need one.

But grab the shafts out of the second one for spares.

So they dropped the two axles on my trailer. I looked at one and noticed it was a Dana. This was the one that came out of a Chevy Express van 3500.  I looked at it quickly and said, Dana 70 yea I’ll take that even though it’s not the 14 bolt they said it was.

Well I get home and then realize that the cover looks awfully big. So I grab a spare 60/70 cover I have and immediately see how much bigger this is.  I get excited for a minute thinking I scored an 80, but not so fast. Plot twist. Apparently this is a Dana Super 70 (/273 model) that I didn’t even know existed until yesterday.

I need to pull the cover and do some exploring. Reading online it could have 35 spline or larger 37 spline axles. It could have 10.5 D70 gears or a larger Super 70 10.75” gear. It could use D80 carrier bearings and carrier, or it could have D70 stuff.  The internets are all over the place on this one.

The axle tubes are slightly larger than the truck 14 bolt next to it, measuring at just over 3.5”.

That's a bigun. What are your plans for the axles?

Looks like gear selection is very limited for a super 70? I’m only seeing 3.73 and 4.11

Pretty cool haul Scott.  I have heard of the Jantz Jana 70 kits for the 60's.  But not sure I knew of a "super 70".

@patman  I am tired of buggy life. Going to be building a JKU up.  I was thinking the van axle being wider was going to be a better match for a SD 60 front, until it turned into a weird axle.

So now going to use the 14 bolt instead.  Not sure what to do with the Super 70. Maybe return it. The only gears I found available (if it does have the bigger 10.75” gear) is 3.73, 4.11, and 4.56.

Ok so joking about the buggy life. Buggy life is the best life. But I am beginning a JKU build soon for someone else.

So I pulled the cover and an axle shaft on this mystery axle tonight. It got too dark before I could measure to the ring gear to determine the size. It has side adjusters for the carrier preload which is nice for a Dana axle. The axle shaft was standard 1.5” 35 spline.
