So they dropped the two axles on my trailer. I looked at one and noticed it was a Dana. This was the one that came out of a Chevy Express van 3500. I looked at it quickly and said, Dana 70 yea I’ll take that even though it’s not the 14 bolt they said it was.
Well I get home and then realize that the cover looks awfully big. So I grab a spare 60/70 cover I have and immediately see how much bigger this is. I get excited for a minute thinking I scored an 80, but not so fast. Plot twist. Apparently this is a Dana Super 70 (/273 model) that I didn’t even know existed until yesterday.
I need to pull the cover and do some exploring. Reading online it could have 35 spline or larger 37 spline axles. It could have 10.5 D70 gears or a larger Super 70 10.75” gear. It could use D80 carrier bearings and carrier, or it could have D70 stuff. The internets are all over the place on this one.
The axle tubes are slightly larger than the truck 14 bolt next to it, measuring at just over 3.5”.
