Because it is the day that the pilgrims and Indians got together, ate turkey, corn, some greens, some rolls, watched college football rivals play and made Thanksgiving Day parade floats from the skins of Buffalo… o wait….  ::)

I vote, another crock of **** holiday. Historical evidence even shows November is way too late in the year for Thanksgiving if they truly had it after the harvest. By Thanksgiving it would be cold and the summer harvest long over… Look outside right now, would you want to be eating in 30-45 degree weather (remember pilgrims did make colonies further north than GA so it could be cooler). But then again I think Christmas is a big crock of **** too. Sure maybe at one point a style of these holidays did happen but not the way (or time) they do today.

i do i do ....

When the white people came to America and they ran outta food  the indians thought they would share their food and train the white people how to farm here... the white people thought it was nice that they did that and thought about having a BBQ, so they invited the indians over and they brought food as well...

some little white kid said thanks for giving us poor white people the means to live by and by the way let me show you what this stick does...

BOOOMMM and so the white kid kills the indian and the war started.. see it doesnt pay to give some poor white kid a gun...

I bet Chuck has a better reason than all of us. Jerm, you are right though... I can't imagine pilgrims and Indians sitting at the "picknick" table in Nov in the northern US saying... "this is fun" in freezing temps!
I've grown tired of this.

It's amazing how many people think or was taught that Thanksgiving had something to do with the Pilgrims and the Indians! It has nothing to do with them.

Well, before George Washington became President of the United States the colonies were controlled by the Continental Congress. On November 1, 1782 they orderd that the following proclamation for thanksgiving on the 28th day of November to be religiously observed. Here's a copy of the actual proclamation,

" PROCLAMATION.
IT being the indispensable duty of all Nations, not only to offer up their supplications to ALMIGHTY GOD, the giver of all good, for his gracious assistance in a time of distress, but also in a solemn and public manner to give him praise for his goodness in general, and especially for great and signal interpositions of his providence in their behalf: Therefore the United States in Congress assembled, taking into their consideration the many instances of divine goodness to these States, in the course of the important conflict in which they have been so long engaged; the present happy and promising state of public affairs; and the events of the war, in the course of the year now drawing to a close; particularly the harmony of the public Councils, which is so necessary to the success of the public cause; the perfect union and good understanding which has hitherto subsisted between them and their Allies, notwithstanding the artful and unwearied attempts of the common enemy to divide them; the success of the arms of the United States, and those of their Allies, and the acknowledgment of their independence by another European power, whose friendship and commerce must be of great and lasting advantage to these States: ----- Do hereby recommend to the inhabitants of these States in general, to observe, and request the several States to interpose their authority in appointing and commanding the observation of THURSDAY the twenty-eight day of NOVEMBER next, as a day of solemn THANKSGIVING to GOD for all his mercies: and they do further recommend to all ranks, to testify to their gratitude to GOD for his goodness, by a cheerful obedience of his laws, and by promoting, each in his station, and by his influence, the practice of true and undefiled religion, which is the great foundation of public prosperity and national happiness.

Done in Congress, at Philadelphia, the eleventh day of October, in the year of our LORD one thousand seven hundred and eighty-two, and of our Sovereignty and Independence, the seventh.

JOHN HANSON, President.
Charles Thomson, Secretary.

I like Chuck  ;D

This is the kind of stuff I like... get away from the CRAP that highschool text books teach us. There is so much more to history that affects our everyday life yet no one wants to learn it because it is "boring".
