35 on stock tire carrier?

So I have 35's on the way, can I mount my spare on my stock tire carrier or will it not handle it? 35 x 17

I carried a 35" on my last JK. The gate seemed to do well but near the end of the 26k miles there was a dimpled around the bottom hingle. I would say you can do it for a little bit but a tire carrier would be on the short list.

Do they make an HD carrier? I have a factory replacement HD carrier on my tailgate. Although I bet they don't. The sheet metal on the JKs is like paper.

Believe it or not, the tail gate on the JK is actually quite a bit stronger than the TJ. I carried a 37" tire on there for a while until I bent the relocation bracket at Tellico. Now I'm gonna wait for a carrier before I really jack something up. The weight will be OK with the 35. Just make sure it doesn't rest on the bumper. The bumper is attached to the frame and flexes differently than the body.

the general rule most have used is if the backspacing is enough for it to fit on the axle without rub it will fit the gate too. Mine actually touched the rear bumper and as Livingston said this not good. If I would have landed my rear bumper on a ledge and pushed it up I would have pushed the tire up too killing the gate. Some have trimmed the plastic rear bumper since it is hollow.

just take the tire off and leave it at camp when you wheel...less jarring, stress, etc. then you shouldnt have a prob with bending the tailgate.

I just figured I would buy a rear bumper / tire carrier combo down the road but I am open to seeing what you are talking about. Got a link? Want to PM me a price? Will it work with the stock bumper as well as most aftermarket bumpers?

yes  and yes and yes... when i had the chrome tube bumber i was running 35's then and still havent changed out carriers.. rugged ridge makes it.. see if there is a pic of it somewhere
