Amicalola Falls trails--want to go?
« on: October 15, 2009, 12:35:03 AM »
These trails were recommended to me to go on since I'm a noob {popcorn}. What're everybody's opinions of these trails? Are they trails or just maintained forestry roads? I'd like to go check them out sometime in the next few weeks. Hopefully the monsoon season will be over then {boohoo}. Anybody want to go? Maybe make it a camping weekend?

they sound like forestry roads, i would be game to go out exploring around the region.

They are legally defined as roads but no longer maintained by the FS or county. There are ruts, exposed rock and such and a few muddy areas. Not a super challenge but if you want to learn how to use 4wd, pick lines and learn how to crawl a little they are great. I might be game to go one weekend, just let me know when.

Just FYI, much of the original Amicolola trail system is closed. There are Forest Service roads as mentioned. JK newbies just did a ride up there and the photos are all of muddy dirt roads. I suggest the roads above Dalonega that are gravel and have. a rocky 4wd section that stock jeeps make easily.

A lot of the old stuff was closed but pretty sure the 3 I speak of are still open. It has been awhile though

Oh that map is old as hell and the Anderson side is long closed due to erosion. There is another thread in here where I broke down the remaining open trails... who knows where it is though

The only date I can't go is Oct. 24th (have to take a Regents exam for school). Oct 31st for Halloween ride anybody? Costume would be optional... {hihi}. If that's not good--weekend dates in Nov. 7 or Nov 14th.

Here's the links I found for map info (thanks BigJerm and Doug):

I did a couple of these trails in the Spring this year...any stock 4x4 will have no problem. Nice ride through in the forest and plenty of places to pull off and have lunch, etc. I'd say it's a day trip since there isn't anything technical, a couple hours of slow scenic driving is all we found that was open . The falls were a nice pitstop for some pics and such.  :)
