Parking brake rule question?
« on: March 25, 2010, 07:02:35 PM »
Could someone tell me how strict is the functional parking brake rule enforced. I've tried everything twice and the one on my yj refuses to work. I'd like to come on some trail rides this summer and that is the only thing on the list I don't have yet.

I will say that a parking brake is an essential safety item. Just last weekend on our Choccolocco Mtn. ride, I broke a rear pinion yoke on a steep incline on the side of the mountain. The only way off the hill was to remove the rear drive shaft. Would you want to be working under your rig with out a park brake on the side of a mountain? There are alternatives, such as line locks. I use a fully hydraulic line lock that I ordered off flea-bay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/BRAKE-LOCK-LINE-LOCK-for-Rat-Rod-Tow-Truck-On-Off-Road_W0QQitemZ230453098298QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories?hash=item35a813373a) it works great and is cheap. Please think safe, if not for yourself do it for your family and us. We don't want anyone hurt or killed on a ride. Thanks

how hard was the line lock to install?  i have been thinking about doing an electric line lock(S) in my jeep.  i can't seem to keep an e-brake for very long, never fails rebuild the brake, go wheeling, four low for a while then relize the ebrake is still on.  brakes toast.

x4, if you dont have an emergency brake, look into a line lock/roll control. Can be had cheap, no cables to adjust.

I thought about a line lock but I had several people tell me that they would quickly blow out the slave cylinders because they aren't made to handle pressure for a long period of time.

Not really neccesary to hold for a long amount of time, but at times you will need/want them. I don't totally agree with the blow out statement, I've been using mine for about a year and a half, I have left it locked for almost 2 months during a repair in my shop. I actually forgot it was locked and couldn't figure out why the Jeep wouldn't move the first time I tried to move it after the repairs. So 2 month's later, brakes still locked, no blown parts. I always tow with them locked also.

Mike, it aint real hard to install, just cut the line, do a double flare on each side that you cut, route the line coming in from the M/C into it, and route the line coming out of the lock back into your line you cut going to the brakes.

Its embarrassing to even say. In the process of trying to get them to work I had adjusted the cable so tight that the brake shoe adjusters weren't even touching the shoes. The e brake cable was basically acting as the adjuster. I loosened the cable, adjusted my brakes then adjusted the e brake cable. It works great, now I'm ready to ride. When we going?

happen to have a flare tool?  i'm wanting to put 2 electric line locks in the rear.  one for each tire.
