Definitely get worse mileage with ethanol. I used to work with a guy that drove a FFV and did a lot of interstate travel for work. He ran 5 tanks of gas and 5 tanks of ethanol once to see the difference, he said the decreased mpg with e-85 and lower cost made the e-85 and the gas within tenths of a penny for cost/mile. Corn based ethanol sucks in pretty much every way: too expensive, poor gas mileage, and raises cost of practically every food we eat. Ethanol also wears rubber fuel lines out faster than pure gasoline on older vehicles produced before e-10 was popular. There are some companies making ethanol out of waste product, which is a much better idea, but its not very popular yet. Personally, I think kudzunol would be an excellent alternative fuel. No one farms kudzu so it wouldn't increase food costs, it would be so cheap it would justify crappy mpgs, and it grows so fast you could easily keep up with a large demand.
