2011 GM Oil Changes
« on: July 30, 2010, 01:36:38 PM »
If you're considering buying a 2011 GM, be careful.
I was just reading how GM is introducing  their own property motor oil. Dexos 1 (Gas) Dexos 2 (Diesel)
What this means is that for a regular car care center will have to pay a royality to supply the product & that's going to be around 25 - 30% more than regular synthetic motor oil. If you're go to Jiffy Lube to get a normal 30 dollar oil change, it could end up being along the lines of 60. Apparently using normal oil will cause problems .."costly repairs".
The kicker to this is that guess who is exempt from the royalties? The dealerships. They're trying to slowly take away the do-it-yourselfers. This is one step in them doing that. Make sure you check out right to repair act also.

VW had a similar thing on their 04-07ish TDIs. They require a special formulation of oil that basically was dealer only at the time and if you used other oils the cam would flatten itself out.

The aftermarket will introduce a similar product I would imagine.
