YJ rear
« on: September 07, 2010, 08:26:52 AM »
Broke something @ River Rock this weekend!
Want to upgrade to an 8.8 or ???.after talking to Mark he suggested the 8.8...I have 35/with locker but may have snapped an axle shaft..don't know. It has 4.10 gears so I'm open for suggestions on who may have what before going to the salvage route.

Mark is right on the 8.8 swap. Just sold one to Richard but will keep on the lookout for another.

I have access to them but need to know what the reqar needs to come from and the year.
F-150..Bronco and the like.
I'm sure the tag will confirm ratio.

I had an 8.8, and with 35's, it's just too big and hangs on everything.  Might be Ok with 37's+.

The 8.8 is strong, but the 44 is almost as strong and offers more ground clearance.

If you go 8.8, make sure you weld the tubes.

You want an explorer (I think any after 92) with disk brakes is a 31 spine axle where the others are 28. The f150 and broncos are to wide.

44...?
I didn't think there was a simple formula for that in a YJ.
I run 35s max so I don't think thats an issue but strength is.
Just want to keep things as simple as possible..age has taught me to not over do what my body can handle!

Pretty sure you can shave one down fairly easily. Of course personally I'd likely shave any axle I went through the trouble of swapping.

You'll definitely want to stay away from any Bronco or F-150 axle. They'll be full width and either 5x5.5 or that funky metric pattern.
